Today, Mayor Ken Sim and your ABC Vancouver team are releasing the Vancouver Agenda, a clear set of actions to make Vancouver safer, more affordable and better equipped for growth. That means at least 100 new involuntary and secure care beds in Vancouver, action on open-air hard drug use, replacing aging SROs with self-contained homes, and a fair-share approach so Vancouver is no longer expected to carry the region’s supportive housing burden alone. And we will introduce Three Strikes and You’re Out for failing supportive housing providers. Supportive housing should make vulnerable residents safer and healthier. Providers that repeatedly allow serious crime, open drug dealing, dangerous drug use, fires and other serious safety problems to continue without taking corrective action will face escalating enforcement. After three qualifying strikes, the City will move to revoke their business licence, subject to its legal authority and due process. Being vulnerable should never mean being expected to live in chaos. The Vancouver Agenda also means fighting to put Vancouver school tax dollars back into Vancouver classrooms, securing childcare funding that keeps pace with growth, and continuing to tackle affordability here at home. Our Keep Building Vancouver housing plan will keep increasing supply, cutting red tape, speeding up approvals and creating more housing choices for families, renters and the people who make our city work. We will continue to do our part. And we expect other levels of government to do theirs.
