Not wrong - but the REVERSION from discipline and rehabilitation to public spectacle as the channel for the vassal of state power - and thus - systemic control of population…is something Foucault or post structuralists would find droll or at least interesting!
I am getting lots of incoming questions about the public execution of Nidal Hasan, mostly because I have been outspoken on wanting public executions for over a decade.
My position is simple: Executions should be public and brutal, not private and medicalized. They are the ultimate example of the state's monopoly on violence, and the only way to keep that from running out of control is to confront voters with the trade they have made every single time, that they might have appropiate confidence or revulsion in the institution.
This is not new thinking. George Washington thought the same. The way we have shifted from hanging to firing squads to doctors quietly injecting chemicals that send our worst gently off to sleep is awful and dystopian, a total short-circuiting of important feedback mechanisms. It makes needless executions more likely, not less so. People who demean this as barbaric or yucky miss the whole point. It doesn't somehow become torture or inhumane (as the UN is suddenly claiming) just because we decline to hide the act behind a curtain.
And then there are those who suggest any revel in the death of those who truly deserve it is an indicator of a broken or diseased mind. To the contrary. It is normal, good, and aligned with our natural and national order. That it has not been done here in 60 years is an indictment in and of itself.
And that is without even getting into the fact that men were not hung for stealing horse, but that horses may not be stolen.
"I would to God that one of the most attrocious in each State was hung in Gibbets, up on a gallows five times as high as the one prepared by Haman. No punishment, in my opinion, is too great for the Man, who can build his greatness upon his Country’s ruin."
- George Washington, 1778
I don’t find this surprising at all - actually. Canada says no to most ambitious things - it’s not in our DNA. Rather than forcing that or being surprised - Canadians should vote with their feet and go elsewhere or enjoy a placid and mid - but cold - quality of life!
ZOMG THIS IS AMAZING. Finally a brand statement for Canada. "CANADA: TEMU AMERICA."
Canada already consolidated +1,500 sites into Canada.ca but it would be GREAT to have an AI front-door that people can talk to that is designed incredibly well.
I prototyped and Unofficial concept, inspired by america.gov.
Here's what it looks like.

I've been in this EXACT spot at YYZ and although I cannot comment on the smell - I CAN comment on the fact that I find it impossible that about 3/4s of these planes are disabled in wheelchairs. 1/3 - sure - but 3/4s...which is about 60% above higher than average destinations in the US - I find hard to believe.
This of course is a Cobus 3000. The first thing you see getting off a flight anywhere in EU - even if your plane is parked 100 ft from the terminal. Why? Turns out - it has a lot to do with the EU's favorite export - Regulation.
What do YOU think the unions thinks?!? This is why it took years to get automated bag handling in Frankfurt, Germany - years after it came to Frankfort, Kentucky.
He’s right. Pulitzer Prize winning photo.
On a Metro train in Washington, an American sat surrounded by masked extremists. A journalist was there to record it. Two hundred and fifty years of American history collapsed into a single frame.

All of these takes are really really bad. What most fail to realize is that this is the perfect take for Canada. Because it’s what Canada is - resentful of outliers. Founders with ambition are the overwhelming minority of a minority in this country; where 80% of all employment growth over the last 10 years has been public sector. I may be the only investor in Canada that has no government capital in their fund.
I see a lot of Canadian entrepreneurs trying to inject ambition into the country’s discourse. Stop trying to make “fetch happen” - because culture does two things: attracts those who are like minded and repels those who aren’t. Canada’s most ambitious have already left - starting with Elon Musk himself.
Canada has always had a culture in tension between encouraging growth and ensuring equity. It’s unique in the world for this. Over the last decade though - the pendulum has really shifted towards equity over growth. It’s shifted so far that it’s not coming back. The sooner people realize that the better.
