Over five days in Kigali, I joined conversations on systems thinking, markets, farmer prosperity, leadership, and political commitment at the AFS Forum.
Here are the five lessons I carried away.

Production, markets, nutrition, climate, finance, and policy influence one another. Acting on one part without understanding the others can create unintended consequences elsewhere.

Farmers and agrifood SMEs need more than temporary project support. They need sustained access to markets, finance, technology and commercially meaningful partnerships.

Success is not only about scale, visibility or technical sophistication. It is about whether farmers build profitable, resilient and dignified livelihoods.
Roy Steiner of The Rockefeller Foundation centred the conversation on lasting farmer prosperity, while TIMEโs Justin Worland examined the leadership and structural conditions affecting farmers.

It develops through listening, reflection, experimentation, and reconsidering our assumptions.
FAOโs Corinna Hawkes reinforced the importance of investing in the people who must lead, coordinate and implement transformation.

The town hall with H.E. President Paul Kagame brought the discussion back to responsibility, agency, and implementation.
Africa can build global partnerships, but its transformation must be driven by African institutions, African leadership, and decisions grounded in the continentโs realities.
Together, these sessions reminded me that food systems thinking is not simply about recognising complexity.
It is about making better choices and turning shared ambition into practical action.

#AFSFReflections: What role can members of parliament play in helping governments deliver on their food systems transformation commitments?
Last week at the #AFSForum2026, I had the opportunity to discuss this question with Hon. Francoise Uwumukiza, Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and Deputy Secretary-General of the African Food Systems Parliamentary Network, and Hon. Thฤpang Tลกita-Mosena, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Lesotho.
Food systems transformation is not only a policy challenge, but also a political one.
Parliamentarians can play an important role through legislation, oversight, accountability, and political leadership.
As the African Food Fellowship, we look forward to working with legislative institutions to expand our network of connected leaders who work together to shift policies and investments and help the continent deliver on its food systems transformation agenda.

Hosted by @TIME and presented by @AGRA_Africa, this invitation-only, high-level thought leadership and networking convening focused on the future of farmer prosperity in Africa.
It brought together African and international leaders from agriculture, research, agribusiness, climate, philanthropy and development to mark ๐๐๐ฅ๐โ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐, reflect on two decades of progress and consider what must come next to deliver lasting prosperity for Africaโs farmers.
Among those gathered were H.E. Hailemariam Dessalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia and Chair of the AGRA Board; Alice Ruhweza, President of AGRA; and Roy Steiner, Senior Vice President, Food Initiative, at The Rockefeller Foundation.
Representing ๐ง๐๐ ๐, Senior Correspondent Justin Worland moderated a discussion featuring Dr Ismahane Elouafi, Executive MD of CGIAR, Elizabeth Wathuti H.S.C , O.G.W, Kingsley Moghalu, and Temiyeoluwa Alabi.
Under the theme, ๐๐ฆ๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐จ๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ ๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ต๐บ: ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ฉ๐ช๐ฑ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ง๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ขโ๐ด ๐๐ฆ๐น๐ต ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฅ ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ฑ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ, the conversation raised a challenge that sits at the centre of Africaโs food systems agenda:
Farmers can increase production and remain vulnerable when markets are unreliable, finance is inaccessible, climate information arrives too late, technology is disconnected from everyday decisions, or value is captured elsewhere in the system.
It requires us to understand and strengthen the connections between the farm, markets, finance, technology, climate, policy, and institutions.
This is the argument I advance in my book, Africaโs agricultural challenges are connected.
It also reflects the leadership thinking I continue to develop through the African Food Fellowship and The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA): Leaders must see beyond individual projects, connect different actors, and turn shared ambition into practical action.
Through @Shambapro , we are applying this thinking by helping farmers manage their farms as enterprises, build reliable records, and make better decisions in increasingly uncertain conditions.
Africaโs next food chapter should not be judged only by tonnes produced, technologies launched, or capital committed.

Africa shouldn't rent its agricultural intelligence, it should build it here.
That was the throughline for our Director of Programs, Dumisani Dube, on Day 1 of the #AFSForum2026, where he joined the panel "Investing in the Foundations of AI at Scale", a conversation on the investments needed to unlock AI for African agriculture, from infrastructure and skills to making AI solutions accessible, affordable, and relevant for farmers.๐ฑ
Dumisani's message was clear; the opportunity is to equip African talent with the tools to turn local realities into locally built solutions with sovereign AI infrastructure as the foundation for demand-led innovation.
The proof is already on the ground. Over the past three months, @AISCAfrica has delivered more than 196,844 GPU-hours of sovereign compute to researchers and innovators across 14 African countries. The computing capacity to build homegrown AI on African soil, under African ownership.
๐The opportunity now is to connect this growing pool of talent and infrastructure to the realities of our food systems: enabling innovators to build AI that responds to farmers' needs, strengthens agricultural productivity and resilience, and stays grounded in the African context.
