To celebrate the publication of three new papers from our group, as well as a Best Poster Award, we had our traditional pizza lunch! Congrats, @Jone_MuUg, @Aitor_ZIBIO, @MatiasPicchio, and Xavier Larrañaga on your achievements.
Last week, the ZiBio group came together for an international lunch. We enjoyed delicious dishes from Argentina, Brazil, China, the Basque Country, the Canary Islands, Mexico, Germany, Iran, and Cameroon. A tasty way to celebrate the different cultures in our group!
Pleased to share that our PhD students participated in #SBAN2026 and presented their exciting research! 🧪
@amirreza_mans gave an oral presentation on fucoidan nanoparticles targeting the blood–brain barrier, while Yanne Amassoka presented a poster on nanoparticle-mediated targeting of microglial glycolysis.
Congratulations to both, and best wishes as you take the next steps in these exciting projects! 👏
At today's group meeting, PhD student Yanne Amassoka presented the potential of FLIM to investigate pro- and anti-inflammatory microglial phenotypes. 🔬🧠
She ended with this lovely AI-generated image of our team! Great to see such gender balance and cultural diversity at ZIBIO! 🌍
AI is here to stay! 🤖✨
🎉 Great news from #ESB2026!
Congratulations to Jone Muñoz Ugartemendia @Jone_MuUg for winning the Best Poster Award at the 35th Annual Conference of the European Society for Biomaterials in Antwerp! 🏆👏
A fantastic recognition of her work. Very proud to see her research recognized by the biomaterials community!

Last month, the @ZibioGroup hosted the #PolymersForHealth Workshop. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas and foster new collaborations. Special thanks to @soleorellano and @RAKESHK24519897 for presenting recent advances from our group.
@POLYMAT_BERC, @Ikerbasque
We are very happy to welcome Maria Eugenia Taverna to our group! 🎉
Maria Eugenia has joined ZIBIO as a postdoctoral visiting researcher from the Institute for the Development of the Chemical Industry (INTEC, UNL-CONICET, Argentina) within the framework of the IONBIKE 2.0 Marie Curie Staff Exchanges project @IonbikeR.
It is a pleasure to have her with us, and we look forward to working together over the next 9 months! 👩🔬🔬
After four years of outstanding research at the ZiBIO Group at POLYMAT, Sara Martín Colomo is concluding her PhD stage under the supervision of Aitor Larrañaga. Her work has focused on advanced bioresorbable biomaterials and tissue engineering strategies. We are excited to see the final outcome of her PhD thesis in the coming months. Congratulations Sara on this important milestone! 🎓
Our ZiBIO group was proud to attend TERMIS-EU 2026 in Palma de Mallorca! 🌍
Yanne Amassoka, Sara Martín, Asier Panfilo, and Beatriz de Passos presented their latest research in biomaterials and tissue engineering, exchanged ideas with international researchers, and strengthened collaborations within the regenerative medicine community.
Celebrating 3 new publications from our ZiBIO group members with pizza! 🍕🎉
🔹 Xabier Larrañaga published in ACS Nanoscience Au on gold nanorods as modulators of shape-memory PLA/PEG blends under physiological conditions.
🔹 Mahboubeh Firuzeh & Estefano Giuzio published in Materials Horizons on mixed ionic-electronic conducting eutectic soft materials for bioelectronics.
🔹 Sara Martín Colomo published in the Journal of Tissue Engineering on nanopatterned bioresorbable elastomeric scaffolds promoting neural, glial, and endothelial differentiation from stem cells.
