Blacked-out poster at #SfN2018 from @neuronewy lab, submitted because the author was prevented from coming to the USA. The travel ban is an awful policy, and brutally unfair to the people affected, especially trainees. Glad this poster was here as a reminder.

No one survived the AIDS crisis by asking nicely.
You’re ignorant of history if you waste a syllable complaining about people yelling at government officials in restaurants.
To survive, become unbearable. Haunt them like the already dead.
And yeah, vote.

On Friday I spoke at a CERN workshop on gender and high energy physics. I shared the work of @PhysicsNews’ Juno Award, the @1752Group and other evidence-based institutional programs. The head of theory @CERN gave a 30 minute Damore-esque manifesto against #womeninSTEM. – at Camden Town, London
There was a workshop at @CERN recently: "1st Workshop on High Energy Theory and Gender". Apparently Strumia gave a talk and manages to hit every horrible idea on gender issues in STEM while demeaning his female colleagues (at CERN and everywhere else). 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️

Believe women with and without academic degrees. Believe women who are nannies or doctors. Believe women with accents. Believe women who are sex workers. Believe women who are immigrants. Believe women who are afraid. Believe women who are composed. All credible.

That many Latinx students effectively use Spanish all day long yet also fail Spanish classes while their White peers who are generally unable to use the language in conversation fare well in such courses demonstrates the discriminatory ways language “skills” are often defined. – at San Francisco, CA

A good rule of thumb: deep networks show the biggest gains on data from sensors (📷, 🎤). Performance goes from 20 up to 70. Gains for data from humans (text, EMRs) is consistent, but more like 80 up to 83. Words are already high-level features from a biological neural net.
