Lovely impromptu philosophical chat this evening with a construction worker. Went to buy water at a roadside snoopie; he was getting an after-work drink. He asks if I work at the UN (nearby), I say no, sorry. We both return to our own business. And then I think, wait, but why?

Only South Africa can simultaneously be the country that took Israel to the ICJ and also the country that just had to shut down the Pretoria High Court because it has no electricity. We are both so serious and somehow not.
JUST IN: Gauteng High Court in Pretoria temporarily closed down because of power outage. Generator also not working. Full statement:

I don’t think there’s been a time in my life when the world felt better primed to be reminded why we need journalism. Proper journalism. Independent, ruthless, courageous storytelling. We are not going to survive this *gestures at… everything* without it.

🚨 Big win for democracy! A German court has ordered X to hand over election data after researchers flagged possible voter manipulation. 2024 saw the highest rates of election misinformation ever recorded. This is a crucial step for transparency! More: sa.lrc.org.za/4gy0oA7

If you’re trying to understand what’s happening in Goma, I highly recommend this week’s issue of @thecontinent_ . It’s free to access via WhatsApp and it’s the most comprehensive weekly newspaper on matters Africa.

I don't know why we need to say this over and over again. If you think this is too much, then YOU CANNOT AFFORD A FULL TIME DOMESTIC WORKER. You're not entitled to one.
New Minimum has been published. If you have a full time domestic worker (Mon-Fri) you should be paying them R4,989.88 per month at a minimum…no excuses

Oh, he 100% knows it’s misinformation. He doesn’t care.
Elon Musk bought twitter on the ticket of debunking fake news and misinformation, but today he is the most gullible person ever, believing fake news about white genocide and there so called land grabs. You are different to mainstream media Elon. @elonmusk

By virtue of being human, EVERYONE has the right to: - life - equality - human dignity Life & human dignity are sacrosanct & are ENTIRELY non-derogable. The right to equality is non-derogable wrt unfair discrimination based on race, colour, origin, sex, religion or language. ✌🏾

My favourite is “adventurers”. Like our ancestors were just out for a stroll to document different kinds of trees... ‘Oops! I commandeered a country! Oh well, the sunshine is nicer here than back home. Might as well stay…. Guess we’ll need to install our own government then.’
History was written in a way that totally downplays Europe’s crimes. The way colonisers are referred to as “settlers” is one example. Very peaceful word, for a ruthless group of people.

I asked some friends in the USA recently why it feels from the outside like there’s no pushback. No fight. They said one possibility is that folks are still shattered from the last Trump administration, and it feels a bit like everything was left on the line, nothing achieved.

It made me reflect on South Africa, and how, despite often it feels like the ‘summit of one mountain is the base of another’, we don’t stop. While there are people who believe, we will not give up. No matter how many Onion-worthy headlines we wake up to. We can’t let up.

I don’t envy friends in the States right now - it must be unbearable and seem impossible. I just wanted to share that it had me, once again, reflecting on how incredible South Africa is, and how most South Africans are relentless in the quest for real change.

Zero chill.
I once asked Kallie Kriel if AfriForum has any black members. He said "Ya, we have one", so I asked if they make him ride in the back of the bakkie.

Might not feel this way on twitter - but back here on earth, DOGE did not have a great day yesterday on the @USAID front. Elon's attempt to speedrun the destruction of USAID is starting to hit real legal and political bumps. The pushback is starting - and must be sustained. 🧵

Let’s be clear, Afriforum represents its about 315000 paying members. It does NOT represent all white people or even all white Afrikaans speaking people in South Africa. Campaigning for a foreign government to interfere or influence South African domestic policy is unpatriotic, and some would even say could be seen as treasonous. #ProudlySouthAfrican

I completely forgot about Gareth. He’s still around? Hiding indeed.
What I have learned this week with Trump and Kallie and Gareth and every one of their followers is that we have been hiding a lot more dumb white people than even I thought we had.
