macbookair + vscode(zerotier(homeDev(32 cores + 128g))) this is much more responsive, faster, and cheaper than summoning the cloud resources.

Straight to the point: I successfully installed @OPNsense on this amazing device. Specs: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU C2758 @ 2.40GHz (8 cores, 8 threads) 16GB RAM Console port Dual USB ports Six Gigabit Ethernet ports LCD panel Backstory: The Oracle bought Talari Networks years ago to enter into the SD-WAN space. The Talari E100 SD-WAN end of life was announced a year ago. I decomissioned several of these for a client as it was replaced with a different SD-WAN solution. I wondered if I could re-purpose it into a #OPNsense device given it had such great I/O at first glance. Once I had time, I opened one up and I was beyond pleased to find out, it is a fairly "normal motherboard" (USB ports onboard, SATA-3 6Gbps ports, DDR3 RAM slots, 64-bit CPU) ...making it easy to install OPNsense or Linux or tons of other things and have it be one cool network device The device actually had Debian linux installed that the Talari software ran on top of. I found out how to enter the BIOS, and the default BIOS password of "talari" allowed me access. I had trouble booting the OPNsense USB drive... I like had to reboot it over 5 times and check different settings...double checking I had the USB drive booting first and finally realized I had yet to change the setting from "Legacy" to UEFI (facepalm) On the restart...it instantly loaded the OPNsense USB drive, putting a huge smile on my face. I installed it, figured out which port was LAN and which was WAN. I connected a USB-to-Ethernet adapter to my PC, so I can have a second ethernet port, and connected that to the LAN port on the Talari. Then configured the IP on the OPNsense console (via console cable on PuTTy session from my desktop) for a 10.10.100.1 IP address Then configured the IP on the USB-to-Ethernet adapter for a 10.10.100.5 IP for my PC My regular network has a 192.168.x.x IP layout, so I made the other a 10.10.100.x IP layout. Then once that was done, I could open a browser and access the web interface. Next goal is to install @zenarmor NGFW and @ZeroTier This all happened yesterday afternoon. I thought I should share this and inspire someone to get curious about grabbing cheap end-of-life hardware and give it a new purpose :) I even bought premium Twitter just now to allow me to make this huge post lol. I look forward to sharing more updates about this setup as I tune and adjust it even more. This will replace my #pfSense Dell Optiplex box that I have been running since 2016 #Unix #FreeBSD #NetBSD #OpenBSD #Linux #infosec #virtualization #OPNsense #zenarmor #ZeroTier

Some of the ways I’ve used @ZeroTier this year: • simple bastion host for remote networks • remote WiFi probe on a raspberry pi • multisite mesh vpn network using EdgeRouters • coupled with Virtualhere.com to create a remote usb console server Such a versatile tool!

Well THAT was kinda hilarious. Lost WAN IPv4 but still had IPv6. My multi-site IPv4 mesh network over @ZeroTier continued to function though. Why? The IPv4 packets were tunneled inside the IPv6 links between sites. "dual stack" networking? No, its now RAID-1 networking :P

Almost a decade has passed though. I still marvel again as I read through @ZeroTier 's whitepaper and @adamierymenko 's article on Decentralization, and the design reasons for VL1. What a groundbreaking infrastructure and its unique path to commercialization. Salute.

ZeroTier on MikroTik with OSPF running over it is so cool. (Remember to add the ZeroTier interface to the LAN interface list so the firewall doesn't eat the OSPF packets. Also may need  "Allow Ethernet Bridging" on the endpoint in ZeroTier) – at Waimakariri District, New Zealand

@opnsense So glad to be back. God I missed @ZeroTier so much. I feel like a teenager. Went out into the world and exploring other firewalls. Learning myself. Only to come back where it all started. @sunnyvalley What the heck was i doing without you guys!!

I'm in love with my @CaidoIO + Chromebook + @ZeroTier setup. I can do highly technical hacking with hundreds of thousands of requests from my 2.1 lbs Chromebook while my server at home does all the heavy processing. All secured by a private network by ZeroTier.

For what it's worth, I used @ZeroTier to set up a fallback connection to a machine a few days ago. It was smooth as always, I just wish I had a larger use case :)
