People often mean very different things when they talk about equality. Equality before the law and equality of opportunity are essential to a free society. Imposing equality of outcome, on the other hand, ignores reality and destroys freedom.

Recently, I wrote about how serious our water problem is getting. This year's weak monsoon has made it worse, and in Bengaluru, for example, that means dry borewells and expensive tankers. But we're also wasting water we've already cleaned. Large apartments have to treat their own sewage, but only 20–30% of that water gets used. The rest goes down the drain. Meanwhile, IT parks and factories a few kilometers away are buying tanker water for their cooling towers. @BosonWhitewater takes the treated water apartments don't use, cleans it up for industrial use, and supplies it to these businesses. More importantly, they've made a business out of it. Boson sets up and runs the plant, so the apartment pays nothing, and industries pay less than they would for tankers. Today, Boson supplies over 12 lakh liters a day. This isn't just a Bengaluru problem. Every growing Indian city has apartments and industries close to each other, and reusing treated water is one of the easiest wins we have. We need more people working on hard problems like this. That's also why we've backed Boson and Vikas Brahmavar through @Rainmatterin. If your apartment is letting treated water go down the drain, this is worth a watch🙂

We must honor and reward those who create wealth, giving them every incentive to create more. Meanwhile, we must penalize, or at the very least stop rewarding, those who do nothing but take from others.
A reminder that wealth must be created before it can be distributed. Wealth does not appear out of thin air. It is created through innovation, hard work, investment, and entrepreneurship. If we destroy wealth creation, there will be nothing left to distribute.

With great freedom comes great responsibility. One of the easiest ways to lose freedom is to give up responsibility first. If we expect others to bear the consequences of our choices, they will eventually claim the power to make those choices for us.

The only bullish corner of the market right now is IPOs. The broader market has been steadily falling. The numbers may not fully show it, but it certainly feels like a bear market. IPOs, on the other hand, are a full-on party. Most recent listings have done well, and you can see it in the rush of activity. I don't remember the last time we saw such a stark divergence between the primary and secondary markets. Strange are the times we live in.🙂

The 10-year Treasury now yields 5.35% and the 30-year 5.7%, the highest since 2002. What should be of greater concern is what happens to the economy when yields hit their highest since 1994, when both maturities were over 8%. Imagine 30-year fixed mortgage rates back above 10%.

Milton Friedman on the U.S. public school system: “What we have is a monopoly, and like every monopoly, it’s producing a low-quality product at a very high cost.” “The way to improve that is to have competition—to make it possible for parents to have a choice of the schools their children attend.”

🚨 Japan Just Broke The French Bond Market One Tokyo fund (Sumitomo Mitsui DS) didn’t trim exposure. It dumped every French government bond it held and rotated into German Bunds and short-term Japanese paper. Not a reduction. Full exit. Something that even shocked the Financial Street. The France-Germany 10-year spread blew past 140 basis points, the widest gap since the euro crisis. France's 5-year CDS has spiked up to 81 basis points, the highest since 2013. The higher the number, the greater the risk of national bankruptcy. French domestic holders are now facing a deeper mark-to-market loss and a less liquid exit to sell into the same one-way market. Japanese investors still sit on roughly ¥25 trillion of French debt, second only to American holders and this was a single manager’s book. Carry trades that funded higher-yielding global debt market with cheap yen just got a live demo of how fast the unwind can hit. When the bid from Japan disappears, the largest European sovereign market has to find new buyers at the same time its own government is arguing over a deficit plan that markets already distrust. If more Japanese money follows the same exit, the same flow that once compressed euro spreads can reprice them in the other direction. We now understand what @yutokanzakireal meant by saying “Japan is bringing the entire house down” in response to Scott Bessent’s “I am the house now” statement: Ending cheap-yen funding is forcing a margin call on the leveraged global debt system built on the carry trade and not just the U.S. leverage. France just got the first real look at what Japan’s wealth returning to the homeland looks like.

🚨 JUST IN: 🇮🇳 India’s Zoho is opening its homegrown cloud infrastructure to the next generation of developers. 👇 Zoho co founder Sridhar Vembu said the company built its own cloud infrastructure instead of relying on AWS or Google Cloud. Zoho is now making parts of this infrastructure available to developers through Catalyst, its serverless platform, and plans to offer it free to students. The infrastructure includes databases, storage, computing, identity, messaging and search. The initiative aims to help students build and deploy applications without worrying about infrastructure costs.

A tourist threw orange peels out of a moving car in Sikkim. The car was stopped. He was asked to step out and pick up every single peel. No drama. Just accountability. 🌿 That’s why Sikkim feels different. Cleanliness there isn’t “someone else’s job.” From banning plastic bags to people actively stopping littering, the state has built a culture of ownership and respect for public spaces. Europe's central banks were not built to protect you, they were built to finance wars. The Bank of England launched in 1694 with a single purpose: lend William III 1.2 million pounds to fight Louis XIV, and collect interest in perpetuity. Parliament handed a private cartel a monopoly on note issuance. In exchange, the Crown got its war. Depositors got paper promises. The model spread like an infection. France watched and replicated. John Law established the Banque Générale in 1716, eventually converting it into the Banque Royale, which he used to flood France with paper livres backed by nothing but colonial fantasies about Louisiana. By 1720 the whole scheme collapsed, wiping out French savers across two generations and poisoning French confidence in paper money for over a century. The lesson Europe drew was not "stop doing this." The lesson was "do it more carefully." Germany formed the Reichsbank in 1876, Sweden had its Riksbank from 1668 (the world's oldest, and a blueprint every subsequent government copied). Each institution followed the same logic: centralize control, monopolize issuance, and give the state a captive lender when revenue from taxation proves politically inconvenient. Ludwig von Mises explained that inflation functions as a tax. Every unit of currency created without corresponding production transfers purchasing power from your savings to whoever spends the new money first, which is always the government. That process accelerated dramatically after World War One, when the gold standard's constraints became inconvenient for states that had already promised their citizens more than they could honestly deliver. The Weimar hyperinflation from 1921 to 1923 is the obvious horror story, but the quieter theft across the rest of Europe through the 1920s and 1930s cost savers just as much over time, simply spread across more years. Gradual expropriation carries less drama and less political resistance. Every European central bank operating today, including the European Central Bank created in 1998, runs on this same foundational logic: the sovereign needs money, the bank provides it, and you absorb the cost through prices that never quite return to where they were.

“It is far easier to concentrate power than to concentrate knowledge. That is why so much social engineering backfires and why so many despots have led their countries into disasters.” — Thomas Sowell No government can ever gather, let alone use, all the knowledge needed to make good decisions for millions of people. That knowledge is scattered throughout society, held by individuals who understand their own needs and circumstances far better than officials do. Power, by contrast, can often be concentrated. When a small group gains the authority to make sweeping decisions without possessing the relevant knowledge, mistakes can be extremely costly. The more power is centralized, the greater the damage when those in charge get things wrong.

What if the plastic we throw away could be turned into fuel? That’s the question Hyderabad-based mechanical engineer and professor Satish Kumar has been working on since 2016. Using a process called plastic pyrolysis, Kumar says his plant has converted more than 50 tonnes of end-of-life plastic into fuel. The process uses heat in the absence of oxygen to break plastic down into fuel products including petrol, diesel and aviation fuel. At the time of reporting, his unit was processing around 200 kg of plastic a day and producing about 200 litres of fuel, which was being sold to local industries for around ₹50 per litre. Kumar mentions that around 500 kg of non-recyclable plastic can produce about 400 liters of fuel. He also said his process does not require water or produce wastewater. From something we throw away in seconds to something industries can put to use, Kumar’s work offers a striking example of how technology can rethink what we call waste. #PlasticWaste #PlasticPyrolysis #WasteManagement #Innovation [plastic waste to petrol, Satish Kumar Hyderabad plastic fuel]
