🚨BREAKING: A California woman who registered her dog to vote and had the ballot counted in the 2021 recall election has been ordered to pay for billboards featuring the dog as a warning against voter fraud.
Laura Lee Yourex of Costa Mesa registered her dog, Maya Jean, and cast mail-in ballots in the dog’s name for the 2021 gubernatorial recall and the 2022 primary.
The dog’s vote was counted in the 2021 election against Gavin Newsom and rejected in 2022. She posted photos of Maya with an “I Voted” sticker and a ballot.
She later posted that the dog was still receiving ballots even after it died. She initially faced five felony counts that could have meant up to six years in prison.
She pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for knowingly registering a nonexistent person to vote. As part of the deal, she paid $1,500 for four billboards along the 55 and 22 freeways that show her dog with the sticker and the message “Don’t be a dog. Voter Fraud is a Crime.”
She said she did it to expose flaws in the system and self-reported. The dog’s vote was still counted once. The billboards will stay up through Election Day.
