📽️ Cheng Lei interview with 人民文娱 about The Lament Of Autumn (玉簟秋) He said the character Yu Changxuan is fundamentally against the wall of reality; if placed in the real world, the conflicts he faces would make him highly vulnerable when measured against moral standards. HE KNOWS THAT, AND HE’S JUST ACTING! 🆑: “His lingering impact is even greater than when you’re actually performing him. He keeps showing the character’s regrets, you know? He rarely shows the beautiful parts of the character’s life. He carries those beautiful things on his back, it’s all burden, all weight, and your heart just keeps tightening and tightening as you play him.” 🆑: “At first, what attracted me to the role and what I felt after finishing it were completely different. What drew me in was the historical background of that era, then this very dramatic, turbulent life experience. In the end, when I wrapped, it felt like the liveliest restaurant suddenly becoming empty.” 🆑: “Before we started shooting, I imagined it would be full of ups and downs, full of big, intense moments. I just didn’t expect that after leaving, this feeling of pulling away would keep echoing, over and over, and hit so hard afterward—Because while you’re acting, you actually love playing him every day, so it’s hard to find the time to completely piece together what this whole person is really like. After you finish, as time passes, you recall a bit from this moment, a bit from that moment, and you start to feel more and more clearly what kind of person he is. And then you just feel a kind of regret about him.” 🆑: “This character carries a lot of feelings tied to that era, and then there’s the clash between the times and the individual, the conflicts between people around him. You come to realize that what we call “humanity,” when it’s up against the wall of reality, is actually very small and fragile.”
