Incredibly grateful to @arishapiro and @alejanse_ for such a powerful report on what the suspension of the refugee program means for people like Reine and Jacombo.
Listen to the story below, including insight from @KrishVignarajah of @GlobalRefuge. 🎧

For generations, immigrants and refugees have helped strengthen our communities. Proud to celebrate $300,000 in federal funding for Global Refuge to help newcomers build careers, find stability, and put down roots here in Maryland.

🚨 NEW: On Sept. 29, ICE arrested a 25-year-old woman at a Maryland courthouse when she went in to address a theft charge.
The charge wasn’t filed by the police. It was filed by her ex-boss. Over $12.
She remains in ICE detention.

These refugee families did everything asked of them. They submitted to interviews, background checks, and years of waiting abroad, only setting foot on U.S. soil once government officials approved their applications.

This will primarily impact refugees who haven't yet received their green cards.
DHS estimates 186,000 people fall into this category. BUT, about 113,000 refugees have green card applications pending.
So most of this population is stuck in a backlog of USCIS’s own making.
Rosalía literally wrote a perfect song for Bridgerton. If there’s no Spanish royal storyline in S5 that crescendos with Reliquia, we riot
Maryland has the best flag, the best crabs, and the BEST Senators.
And thanks to the their efforts to secure funding, Maryland will have an even stronger workforce as @GlobalRefuge connects motivated refugee workers with employers who need talent.
A win-win all around! 👏
“Punishing families who followed every rule is indefensible, and it’s beneath a country that chose to protect them,” says @KrishVignarajah of @GlobalRefuge as OBBBA healthcare cuts take effect today. 👇
These new restrictions only increase the likelihood that children and families are going to ration essential medication or put off care until a manageable problem becomes an emergency room visit.

Omg I’m so glad I know about the cornrows debacle at the Baltimore Rock Opera Society now.

The White House sold this as kicking undocumented immigrants off Medicaid. But they were never eligible.
Who's actually losing coverage tomorrow? Refugees, asylees, trafficking survivors, and Afghan allies who are all here legally.
A bait and switch w/ disastrous consequences.

NEW: In a Texas courtroom Monday, 25 migrant children lined the pews — a 9yo rested her head on the table, a 6yo pretended to fly an airplane, and a 3yo played with the mic. Many in attendance didn't have an attorney — and a 13yo was ordered removed. A look inside, thru sketches.

While the Trump admin. has not said this explicitly, DHS sources tell me the deportation of non-Africans to Africa is designed to be a warning:
If you’re here illegally / with a tenuous status and don’t self deport, you could be sent to an African nation where you have no ties.
Liberia, an African country roughly the size of Tennessee and home to more than 5 million people, is now hosting deportees from nations like Brazil, Colombia, Honduras and Venezuela who were expelled from the U.S.
CBS News' @camiloreports went there to understand how they ended up thousands of miles away from the U.S. and their homelands.

Bleeding for days before seeing a doctor. Shackled to hospital beds. Denied basic prenatal care. This is what detention is doing to pregnant asylum seekers — and ICE won't even count the miscarriages.
