Fading light and a bit of rain, but I can't complain. Rednecked Grebe at Burton Riggs @YorksWildlife happily feeding on newts. @BirdGuides @nybirdnews
A very obliging waxwing at Heslington Sports Village car park this afternoon. @YorkBirding @nybirdnews @BirdGuides @UniOfYork @yorksport1

"Hope as planetary motion. The zenith of dark betrays its vulnerability. It has peaked. And we are still here." From Gideon Heugh's Darkling - an Advent journey, 2022. Happy winter solstice!
A good 20cm of snow at the Hole of Horcum this morning. ❄️ We were lucky to be the first to walk there today - no tracks in the snow! @NorthYorkMoors @northyorkswx
Nice find at Saltwick Bay today: a good-sized Hildoceras ammonite. Named after St Hilda, who allegedly drove Whitby's snakes off the cliff, where they curled up and turned to stone! Also three Purple Sandpipers present. @NorthYorkMoors @nybirdnews @BirdGuides @UKFossils

There are many ways to get across the point of distortion in the Mercator map. Here's a planisphere indicating a distance across Africa and another distance across Russia and things don't add up

A super day at @FlamboroughBird! The compulsory 'drab-headed bunting' was only for starters... The headland was teeming with goldcrests and thrushes, pallas's and dusky warbler (not radde's imo), brambling, and a YB warbler which apparently was a two-barred warbler. 🎉🐦👌
Applefest at Osbaldwick this afternoon! We pressed 7 litres of single origin Vicarage Vintage. 😋🍎🍏🌞 @St_Thomas_James @DCinUK
Thanks to the @spurnbirdobs ringers who carefully ringed these two beauties and gave people a quick opportunity to see them up close. Both birds flew off happily with a shiny ring each. @YorksWildlife @Natures_Voice @_BTO

How awful can the condition of the world become?
There really is no earthly hope for the folly and mendacity of the human race.
As Advent approaches this is the time to speak rigorously about the hope that is beyond earthly hope. And that is no task for the faint-hearted.
Next time you're in London on a nice day, the Lookout at the 50th floor of 8 Bishopgate is worth a visit. It's free!
I was hugely impressed by the Eco Fair at Beverley Minster. Lots of interesting stalls, talks and activities for young and old. And of course @lukejerram's Gaia was as mesmerising as ever. Well done to the organisers! @DioceseOfYork @ARochaUK @GreenChristian_ @Natures_Voice

It will be another shameful day if @GOVUK rows back on its Net Zero policies. Shortsighted, it will erode credibility at home & abroad. This isn’t the time to seek political advantage with games. Leadership and action are needed, not delay and procrastination.
