On the banality of evil, circa 2026: "part of what made it easier to trust the system was the pseudo-scientific precision of AI. We are all familiar with the breezy, authoritative tone of today’s chatbots. When AI is used for targeting, it brings a similar feigned omniscience to killing...When inevitably flawed human beings make decisions, they can expect others to challenge them. But AI makes it easier for us to defer to its judgments. That deference risks magnifying the human biases that inevitably infect any AI system." theguardian.com/commentisfre…

"McGurk is someone who I’ve written about for years as, in the words of one official who spoke to me, “the prime example of a white man failing up.” This character has gone through Middle East policy in the Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden eras, and, as I reveal in my book, tried to get a job in the second Trump presidency unsuccessfully."
"The reason we need to look at the Biden admin's atrocious policymaking on Gaza is exemplified by this week at the UN..The biggest event yesterday [was] Brett McGurk [on Syria]—which shows you the architects of this policy are coming back to shape our era" thenation.com/article/politi…

Congratulations to @AkbarSAhmed, whose book, CROSSING THE RED LINE, is out today. Especially as Biden administration officials try to whitewash their reputations, Akbar's detailed reporting provides a vital resource for those who want to hold them accountable.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II: This Israeli government's appetite is now a regional threat. And today, Syria is the warning. The international community is choosing not to see repeated incursions, creeping territorial expansion, new facts and posts on the ground, including around vital water resources. Step by calculated step, Israel is testing how far it can go. And every time the international community looks away, Israel learns that it can go even further, across borderlines and legal limits.

As a former National Merit Scholar, I'll say this simply so that you can understand: There is no way to game the system here, it is merit based The founders believed that your ancestry should not determine your destiny - you work hard, you build, you contribute to society, you succeed Indian Americans studying hard, raising high-achieving kids who become doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs is not a problem America needs to solve You'd be upset if they weren't successful and mooching off society, you're upset that they ARE successful -- it's almost like their success is not what upsets you Incredible mask-off moment The right will lose all normies this way, and we will lose for a long time if you keep dragging us down this odious path You're an embarrassment

It’s becoming very clear that when the new right praises meritocracy, the last thing they are is colorblind. Texas has tried to create a meritocracy that rewards academic achievement regardless of race, ethnicity, sex or religion. It’s far from perfect, but one thing is crystal clear — if you do well enough in school you can go to the best university in the state. That’s a promise. But now the results are in, and white men don’t do well enough for the new right. After spending years and years complaining when the left used admissions statistics to decry disproportionate racial admissions, the new right is now doing the exact same thing. nytimes.com/2026/09/17/opini…

There’s a pretty simple explanation for that UT photo. For years, the top 6% of Texas high school students got automatic admission to UT. Now it’s the top 5%. It’s completely colorblind. It’s just class rank. Asian kids are about 5% of Texas graduates, but roughly 21% of the kids hitting a 1180 SAT/24 ACT benchmark. Absolutely kicking ass. And UT’s own numbers make the “foreign students” explanation pretty hard to square. Only about 4% of UT undergrads are international students. What we’re looking at is immigrants and the children of immigrants doing all the things YOU SAID you wanted immigrants to do: come here legally, work hard / succeed academically, and assimilate into our culture. Check. Check. Check. I’m starting to think your problem with this picture might be something else entirely....
I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined.

I've heard this from several former officials, that resigning was "self-serving" How is losing one's job, as well as any possibility of a future job in government, self serving? Whereas staying in government/demonstrating "loyalty" allows you access to future powerful roles.
Biden dep. natsec advisor Jon Finer says resigning over Gaza would have felt "self-serving, a bit performative" and wouldn't have mattered anyway because he wasn't famous enough, but also that he worried his resignation could hurt Biden's chances in the 2024 election.

My latest @ForeignPolicy: Israel is going to annex the West Bank, and this is the greatest threat to Jordan. 1/T 1) "Jordan is a buffer state" -- against what? Under Pax Israelica, every conventional threat against Israel is gone/reduced (Hamas, Hizbullah, Assad, Iraq, Iran)
In Jordan, the Gaza war and newer Israeli advances into Lebanon and Syria have ratcheted fears of annexation of the West Bank, Sean Yom writes. foreignpolicy.com/2026/08/31…

2/N 2) "Israel will exercise self-restraint and not displace Palestinians" -- how'd that work out for Gaza 3) "Annexing the West Bank is a fringe idea" -- it's mainstream, almost every major political party (including Netanyahu's opposition) wants some version of it
