Many people think any given ML project is 99% training.
In reality, it’s 50% evaluation, 40% data cleaning, 8% integration, and 2% training.
The first two set the noise floor for learning. No ML magic matters; the model cannot lower the noise floor, as that’s the optimal bound of Shannon encoding of your data.
Thus, not a single day goes by without me thinking about ontology. Even the old labels have to be constantly reviewed.
See Nura's exciting project!
Excited to share that REPA was accepted to the ICML 2026 AI4Science Workshop! REPA reproduces experiments from paper descriptions. We introduce a 4-stage pipeline and a 5-level reproducibility taxonomy.
Work by @nuratamton, @YisongMiao & @knmnyn at WING NLP Lab @NUS. #ICML2026
It is my pleasure to study in the same lab with this outstanding researcher! Thank you @sigrid_xie for all our research discussions, and the flowers 💐 you occasionally brought to the lab (which is absolutely delightful!).
Congrats to Yuxi Xie 👩🎓 (@sigrid_xie) on her Ph.D. defense on Closed Loop Scaling: Autonomous Improvement of LLM and VLM Reasoning from WING 🎉🎉!

🌟 Meet Yisong Miao, Vector Research Intern
At Vector, Yisong tackled cultural bias in large language models with Vector Faculty Member Dr. Vered Shwartz, exploring why LLMs assume North American contexts and how to help them adapt to different cultures.
"This is my most interdisciplinary project ever. Beyond LLMs, I also read psychology papers and explored concepts in diverse cultures."
Vector internships offer topical research opportunities, world-class compute resources, and access to a thriving AI research community.
Applications close Monday, January 12 at 1:00 PM ET.
Apply today: vectorinstitute.ai/programs/…
Please consider joining my senior Dr. @PanLiangming’s research group! When he overlapped with me at @wing_nus , LM has done amazing work about QA and QG. After he graduated, LM has done amazing works about LMs!
(Entrance exam: Disambiguate all the LMs in the above paragraph)
I am seeking an international Ph.D. student🎓(non-Chinese citizen) to join my lab at Peking University in Fall 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply to PKU's International Graduate Student Program and get in touch. More about my research: liangmingpan.bio/🔬
Thanks for sharing Felix

No wonder Rumelhart was so motivated to (co)-invent backprop, to make trraining deeper nets possible.
I'll finish with another look at his sketch of his optimal language processing model, from 1977
Sadly Rumelhart died of semantic dementia in 2011
Some post #EMNLP2025 fun knowledge: This what I realized in a conversation with @vivian_yanmy and @yajing08042 , when we compared 🇪🇺 and Asian languages. I suddenly realized TCP 🔗 also has such X vs XX rules to say Hello and Goodbye. This can only happen in ACL Conf 👏
Congratulations to Elena Chistova for winning the best paper of @CODIworkshop 2025 🎉
PS: not organizer, but a fan boy for this amazing work!
