Standing together for truth and reconciliation. AFN staff in orange shirts to honour Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities. The orange shirt is a symbol of remembrance and solidarity, that #EveryChildMatters every day. By raising awareness, we commit to truth-telling, understanding the lasting impacts of the residential school system, and ensuring that such harm is never repeated. Let’s continue to listen, learn, and take meaningful action, today and every day. #OrangeShirtDay #NDTR

A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fell—often by quite a bit.

TOMORROW (Dec. 11th) join us at 7 PM for our LAST urbanist hangout of the year! There’s a lot of important housing and urbanist news we can talk about before the year wraps up. We’ll be meeting at The Forks, mustering near the EQ 3 Lounge if space is available.

Disappointing that fearmongering literature against much needed supportive homes is being distributed in River Heights. Attend a City info session next week & sign up to speak/send written comments for the Sept. 12th hearing to SUPPORT supportive homes! winnipeg.ca/supportivehousin…

There is no density so gentle that nobody will mind the change. NIMBYs fear all change. If you are a gentle density supporter you need to forcefully articulate the benefits of allowing gentle density, and not just on paper but enough to get it built at meaningful rates.

WHAT IS HAPPENING Winnipeg transit is rolling out something called the Primary Transit Network which moves all of Winnipeg Transit from a route system (long routes in a loop) to what's called a spine and feeder, where a constant stream of buses moves up and down a main road

I didn’t know that. Parking minimums outside of downtown seem to be untouchable in Winnipeg. It’s annoying.

This is about a year after #yxe did the same thing while also eliminating minimum parking requirements.
My column tomorrow: On Friday, Winnipeg became the latest North American city to effectively eliminate single family zoning, allowing 2-4 homes on every lot city-wide as-of-right. This will reshape our neighbourhoods over time, allowing more “missing middle” housing to be built.

City Council votes 11-4 in favour of Councillor Mayes' restrictive amendments (amendment motion one).

Councillor Mayes argues that since the feds have let the city water down the HAF amendments so far, restricting more and more lots, then further restrictions should be in the clear. Zoning & land-use restrictions truly are death by a million cuts.
