At the @IMFNews–@WorldBank Annual Meetings in Bangkok. More finance matters. But so do its terms, and whether it gives African countries room to invest in jobs, development and climate resilience without deepening debt. #IMFWBAnnualMeetings2026

“Our shared waters can generate progress and shared development for collective regional prosperity.” 🇪🇹 President @TayeAtske Ethiopia’s #UNGA81 statement links clean energy with regional cooperation. #COP32 offers a platform to build partnerships that turn this vision into shared benefits. 🇪🇹 @MFAEthiopia @ETMissionUN

As #Ethiopia prepares to take the floor this afternoon at #UNGA81, with five speakers ahead. I’ll be listening for the priorities we put forward, how we connect them to Africa’s wider concerns, and the contribution we offer to international cooperation. 🇪🇹 @TayeAtske @UNEthiopia @ETMissionUN
#UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres met with H.E. Mr. Taye Atske Selassie @TayeAtske, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. They discussed development priorities in #Ethiopia and peace and security in the Horn of #Africa.

Climate commitments compete for political attention and public resources. Following #UNGA81 and #NYCW, I’m watching what governments are willing to prioritise when those choices become difficult. That is where credibility is earned. @CarbonBrief @ClimateHome @e3g @TheYouthPrint

Following #UNGA81 from Addis this week, with plenty to listen to and reflect on. @antonioguterres’ final General Debate address as #SecretaryGeneral feels like a moment worth pausing for. I’ve especially valued his persistence on #ClimateAction & his calls for #Africa’s rightful place in global decision-making. Thank you, @antonioguterres
"After ten years, I hold one conviction even more strongly than when I have arrived: The greatest power is not the power to dominate. It is the power to build a future that works for everyone." - UN Secretary-General tells #UNGA

Wholeheartedly agree. Wishing everyone at #UNGA & #NYCW strength for the week ahead, with particular appreciation for those whose quiet work makes it all possible.
Wishing strength to friends, colleagues, contacts & co-conspirators for a week of hard work (and occasional madness) in Turtle Bay. Especially those ‘behind- the-scenes’ who make sure papers are printed, water glasses filled, umbrellas readied. All Protocol observed! @UN #UNGA

Replying to @mbachelet
@mbachelet droped out of the race to be the next UN Secretary-General following the 18 September UN Security Council straw poll. On why this latest poll triggered this departure and she is only the first of several others to drop out, read the latest Ideas Indaba piece below.

It is very difficult to see what #Nepal and its people are going through. Nepal’s request presents an important early test for the @FRLossandDamage. The Board’s response could set a precedent for timely, accessible and grant-based support. For Nepal, solidarity must now become action. @LossAndDamage
Nepal has made a formal request to the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) to respond to the catastrophic flood that has caused unimaginable loss of lives and widespread damage. #nepalflood As someone involved in the Transitional Committee that helped establish the Fund, I clearly remember our discussions about making it different from conventional climate funds, more responsive to the realities and urgency of loss and damage. The FRLD now has an opportunity to demonstrate what it was created to deliver: timely, accessible and grant-based support when vulnerable countries face catastrophic loss and damage. We sincerely hope no country has to face such a tragedy. But today, Nepal needs solidarity translated into action. I have fresh memories of visiting the affected area just two days before the disaster, which makes this tragedy deeply personal. Each passing hour brings reports of further loss, while families continue searching for their loved ones. It is deeply difficult to process. The precise causes of this extraordinary event are still being investigated, but it comes against the wider reality of a rapidly warming climate, thawing permafrost, retreating glaciers and growing risks of extreme events across Nepal and the Himalaya. Those who have contributed least to climate change are increasingly bearing devastating #LossandDamage.

Last week in Nairobi at the Africa Forward Summit, an important space bringing together African and French leaders, institutions, businesses, and policy actors to reflect on the future of Africa–France partnerships. Good conversations, interesting perspectives, and an important reminder of how much the global conversation around Africa is shifting from aid and dependency narratives toward partnerships around industrialization, innovation, energy transition, and strategic interests. One thing that stood out for me was how strongly Africa is positioning itself not just as a participant in global discussions, but increasingly as a voice shaping them. This is something we should push forward. A lot to reflect on moving forward, especially ahead of the next phase of climate, development, peace & security and geopolitical conversations on the continent. #AfricaForward #Diplomacy #ClimatePolicy #AfricanLeadership #EnergyTransition

Deeply saddened by the passing of Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis. A trailblazer in African diplomacy and a proud Ethiopian whose legacy helped shape pathways for women and future generations of diplomats across the continent. Her life reminds us that leadership is service, to country, continent, and collective progress. May she rest in peace.
