I guess Ian probably also thinks it's best we keep "coloured" people and immigrants out of certain neighbourhoods since that's what land use policy and covenants were "originally intended for" in a lot of cases.
Dan Williams, a minister of municipal affairs from a town of 4,000, surprisingly doesn't understand that rezoning doesn't force anyone to build anything.
Instead he's just doing what his wealthy suburban developers friends say is best.
These are more than just noisy voices. They are Albertans who care about their community and maintaining neighbourhoods that welcome generations to come.
Nobody I’ve met disagrees with development, but the manufactured, forced high-density infill policy and blanket rezoning are having a real impact on the quality of life for many Edmontonians. We need to pause, reset, and have a thoughtful conversation about the neighbourhoods we all call home to get the right balance.

Her claims are also false. If she spent one minute googling, she would find that the Edmonton got $0 for the zoning bylaw renewal because it was complete prior to the Housing Accelerator Fund.
Goes to show how much the UCP thought about this.

ALT "Table titled 'City of Edmonton Housing Accelerator Fund Action Plan' with three columns: Initiative, Allocation, and Actions. Row 1: Zoning Bylaw Renewal, $0, adoption and implementation of a new Zoning Bylaw (Complete). Row 2: Priority Growth Area & TOD Stimulation, $39M, infrastructure investment in redeveloping areas.
She actually did it... She found a way to blame Trudeau for her decision to interfere in municipal politics.
It might be funny if it wasn't such a blatant attempt to wash her hands of this undemocratic farce #ableg

David is fine with density guys.
Just not in his backyard or whenever.

A friendly reminder of how much anti-housing folks hate the concept of free markets.
The market dictates housing type, unless you artificially suppress it for some weird reason like trying to distract people from a silly referendum.

Danielle Smith compared the housing policy of Edmonton to Toronto and Vancouver and said "actually, Toronto and Vancouver got it right".
Alex's example clearly shows that the Premier and her lacky minister from a town of 4,000 are making up urban policy as they go, fed talking points by a small group of well-funded suburban developers.
And when the premier vows to respect referendum results, we believe her?
Replying to @irbrodie
The Premier’s example is a ~9 minute walk to a new train station. So yeah, this makes sense. Unless your argument is that they should build even taller within a 10 minute walk of an LRT?

Yesterday the Province directed Calgary and Edmonton on how our neighbourhoods should grow.
I want to be clear: my concern is not about rezoning. That's gone. My concern is a pattern of Provincial interference in local decisions, often while that work is still underway 1/ #yyc
I'd like to once again remind people who think Alberta is the "Texas of the North" that Texas actually allows people to build what they want on the property they own.
There is nothing "Texas" about the premier trampling on people's property rights.

Young people in Alberta, I’m sorry to tell you that your government is doing the same things that messed up housing markets in Ontario and BC.
It is amazing how often one has to make the argument that we should trust markets and competition to conservatives, yet here we are!
Let's hear it @PierrePoilievre - the premier of the province you are currently an MP in has gone full gatekeeper.
Replying to @Mill_Moron @GrowTogetherYEG
I wonder if @PierrePoilievre can point to the gatekeepers as easily as he points to the mid-block six-plexes he claimed to support in this video.

This might be the first time I've seen NIMBYs leapfrog the municipal government and go up to the province to block housing development.
It's a bad policy move, but ultimately it's people too young to vote yet who will suffer the main consequences. Sorry, kids.
Over the past few months, endless Albertans have told us the same story.
They saved for years to buy a single family home on a quiet street. They picked that neighbourhood on purpose, because of the park at the end of the block or the school two streets over or the neighbours who watch out for each other.
Then one morning the house next door came down, with no notice, and later a 16 unit complex went up in its place, with nowhere for anyone to park and no consideration for the neighbourhood.
Those are not complaints. They are people describing the place they built a life in with their family.
So today we are acting. Edmonton will return to the density and height rules that were in place before 2024 and common sense minimum parking requirements, utility and water infrastructure considerations are coming back. Calgary will hold the line it set when it repealed blanket rezoning. Both cities will take a hard look at their bylaws and come back with something more balanced.
Alberta needs more homes. We are building more of them than almost anywhere in Canada. But a home is more than a house, and a neighbourhood is more than a supply of lots.
With this move, Smith and her provincial government have made it very clear they are not serious about housing affordability for Albertans.
The irony of a Premier who whines about federal government overreach and then steps on elected councils is not lost here.
Your family home matters. It is the biggest financial investment most people will ever make.
Families have been concerned about what is happening to out-of-control infill in their neighbourhoods.
This morning in Edmonton, I am joined by the Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams, as our government takes action.

If you own a bungalow in Calgary, or have recently sold one after owning it for a couple decades, then yeah - you are probably wealthy on the balance of things.
New Poll: Most Calgarians Support Duplexes or Denser in Their Neighbourhoods — Even Among Voters Who Supported Mayor @JeromyYYC
Our proposal is simple: Four doors, citywide. Duplexes + suites, or rowhouses without.

Happy birthday R-CG! (3 of 22) #unsprawling @YYCNeighbours
While the kind of housing that low-density zoning reform creates is not typically available to those who need it most, it's necessary to address the cause of the housing shortage holistically.

When are we going to stop treating housing like it's pollution? This is so shameful. #yyccc
Everyone loves a good anti-housing lawsuit right?
Shout out to Utaye Lee for laying out why hearings are not representative nor democratic.
