ALT The Malaysian Election System (Part 1 of 2) What is an election? An election is a formal process where political parties or candidates are voted into a position of power - just think back to when you were voting for your ketua darjah back in school! What are the types of elections in Malaysia? A. General elections 1. Federal level There are 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat up for grabs by representatives that will be voted by eligible voters. 2. State level Representatives for the Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) are determined at this level - the number of seats varies depending on each state’s DUN. B. By-elections These are held when there are vacancies due to circumstances such as death, resignation, etc.

ALT The Malaysian Election System (Part 2 of 2) Dewan Rakyat (Parlimen) vs Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) 1. Dewan Rakyat 222 seats Area of jurisdiction: Federal Function: Discuss, debate and legislate Federal laws, government policies, spending and taxation. Example: The proposal ,debate and approval of the amendment to the Federal Constitution to allow those 18 and above to vote in elections. 2. DUN 505 seats Area of jurisdiction: State Function: Discuss, debate and legislate on land matters, public works, local government, agriculture and forestry, Islamic law and public holidays of respective state(s). Example: The Kelantan government’s decision to allow commercial forest logging in the forest reserves of Gua Musang. How often are general elections held? Elections are typically held after the Parliament is automatically dissolved 5 years after the first Dewan Rakyat meeting Or The Yang-Di Pertuan Agong (YDPA) dissolves the Parliament on the advice of the Prime Minister.

ALT What’s the process of an election cycle? 1. Dissolution of Parliament Upon automatic dissolution of Parliament or by the YDPA, a general election must take place within 60 days. 2. Announcement of Election Day The Election Commission (EC) will announce the nomination day and polling/voting day for the general election. 3. Campaign Period From nomination day until voting day, candidates from various parties, factions etc. will typically conduct political ceramahs, sessions etc. to convince voters why they’re worthy of their votes. 4. Voting Day Voters will head over to their local polling centers to cast their votes into the ballot boxes. 5. Announcement of Results Once the voting period is over, the votes are counted and the winner with the most votes of each constituency is announced - typically within 24 hours. 6. Formation of Government Whichever political party or faction that has the most seats (minimum 112 out of 222 Parliamentary seats) is then invited by the YDPA to form

ALT What should you do before voting? Checking your voter status You don’t need to register to vote as Automatic Voting Registration (AVR) has been implemented in December 2021. Head over to mysprsemak.spr.gov.my/semakan to check your voting status. If you are over 18 and you are not on the voter list, file a complaint to the Election Commission and the police immediately Checking your voter constituency In practice, most voters belong to a constituency as determined by the address on their identity cards. Where you vote will determine your travel plans on election day. Unless you are studying or residing abroad, you are required to travel back to your constituency to vote.

ALT How do I decide who to vote for? Research the policy positions taken by the candidates or parties seeking your vote. Here ask a few starter questions to look for: How frequently has the incumbent member attended Parliament? What policies are the candidates advocating for? Are these promises effective and going to benefit your constituency?
