AIPAC is now spending as much as $9 million against Abdul El-Sayed. AIPAC is why weโ€™re at war in Iran. AIPAC is why the U.S. has supported genocide in Gaza. We must say NO to AIPAC. YES to electing Abdul as Michiganโ€™s next U.S. Senator.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government canโ€™t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But thatโ€™s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, itโ€™s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administrationโ€™s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone โ€” all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And itโ€™s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies โ€” from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omarโ€™s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and sheโ€™s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omarโ€™s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, thereโ€™s no reason to believe it will stop with her โ€” or that future presidents, in either party, wonโ€™t do the same.

Three years ago today, 6-year-old Wadea al-Fayoume was stabbed 26 times in his home in Plainfield Township, Illinois. His mother, Hanaan Shahin, was stabbed and choked, and it took her weeks to recover. The man who attacked them was their landlord. While he stabbed them, he yelled, โ€œYou Muslims must die.โ€ Wadea was a Palestinian-American kid who loved basketball. His father called him an โ€œAll-American boyโ€ who was always smiling and full of love. His killer was convicted of murder and hate crimes. His wife testified that he listened to conservative talk radio all the time, and that he had become convinced his Palestinian tenants were a threat to him. Wadea didnโ€™t die in a vacuum. He was killed one week after October 7, at a time when American politicians and pundits were racing to dehumanize Palestinians on every channel. That rhetoric hasnโ€™t gone away. Much of it still comes from AIPAC-funded politicians who treat Palestinian lives, even a 6-year-old boyโ€™s in Illinois, as disposable. Rest in power, Wadea.

His name was Al-Tayeb Al-Hadi Ahmed. He was 16 years old. Both his parents were dead. He was raising five younger siblings. He owed two measures of sesame and four sacks of sorghum. He went looking for work near the Sudanese-Egyptian border. He never came home. His final words to his siblings? โ€œI forgive you, and I am pleased with you. Please forgive me, too.โ€ Even as he lay dying, he worried about repaying the sesame he owed. Sixteen years old. Five younger siblings. A debt measured in sesame. This is what war and displacement have done to Sudanโ€™s children. Robbed them of their childhoods, forced them to carry unimaginable burdens, and, in Al-Tayebโ€™s case, stolen their lives. May Allah grant him Jannah and protect the five children he leaves behind. Remember his name. Remember Sudan. #KeepEyesOnSudan #TalkAboutSudan

A sixteen-year-old boy was beaten to death in a Georgia jail cell in 1970. When his community protested, police killed six men over one night. Every single one of the six was shot in the BACK. Augusta, Georgia. Charles Oatman was mentally disabled and had been jailed over the accidental death of his young niece. He was put in a cell with adult men. He was found dead with burns and injuries that the coroner could not explain as anything but a beating. The city met the protests with force. Six Black men died that night: Charlie Mack Murphy, Mack Wilkerson, William Wright, Sammy McCullough, John Stokes and John Bennett. The autopsies all showed entry wounds in the back. None of the six had been identified as having done anything in particular. One was a man walking home. The state said shotguns had been used by officers and that the deaths were a tragic consequence of disorder. No one was prosecuted for any of the six deaths. Two men were later convicted in the killing of Charles Oatman โ€” his cellmates. For fifty years the city did not mark it. There are now historical markers and a growing local campaign for an inquiry, driven mostly by relatives who were children at the time. Six men, six shots in the back, in 1970, in a city with a newspaper and a television station, and it has no name anybody recognises. The Augusta killings are the kind of buried history that made this us decide to remember the names, confront what happened, and ask why so many families were left without answers. Gaza will haunt this century the way Vietnam haunted the last. Not because it was unseen. Because it was seen and allowed. Because the victims spoke and were ignored. Because the world had every chance to say no. And chose comfort. Chose caution. Chose career safety. Chose the scroll. That is the true scandal of Gaza.

For those who believe we donโ€™t have organized and coordinated censorship of the press in the United States: a billionaire family that has publicly declared Israel to be its single political issue, and is the single largest donor to Friends of the IDF, is buying up the entirety of the American media so any journalist critical of Israel doesnโ€™t get a job, and any story critical of Israel doesnโ€™t get broadcast.

Iโ€™ve seen NAZA. It is not about Gaza or even about IDF rules of engagement. It is 100% a film about Israeli society. It is about how the most liberal, educated and enlightened socioeconomic elites among us could carry out such mass killing, some even while being well aware of it.

I just want to point outโ€ฆ the amount of money the U.S. has spent on war in the last 2.5 months is roughly the same cost that Bernie Sanders proposed for universal college. So the real question is never โ€˜can we afford itโ€™โ€ฆ itโ€™s what we choose to prioritize.
