What the Maldives needs is a commoners’ dictatorship.
In Marxist-Leninist theory, “dictatorship” refers to which class holds state power.
For far too long, political power in the Maldives has served the political elite. Even those who enter politics promising change often end up aspiring to become part of that same elite.
Perhaps it is time for people to truly understand what a commoners’ dictatorship means and aspire to build a culture in which power belongs to ordinary citizens instead.
One country that has constitutionally adopted the concept of a “people's democratic dictatorship” is China.
