Wildly inappropriate that the speaker felt it necessary to specify that the student is Chinese, should go without saying

1/3 Today, an anecdote shared by an invited speaker at #NeurIPS2024 left many Chinese scholars, myself included, feeling uncomfortable. As a community, I believe we should take a moment to reflect on why such remarks in public discourse can be offensive and harmful.

The one paper I can't stop thinking about from #CHI2024 is the nocebo effect paper: "The Placebo effect is robust to negative descriptions of AI". This was really stellar work with wide ramifications for the field. Should've gotten Best Paper. arxiv.org/abs/2309.16606

With another semester ending, here's your annual reminder that teaching evaluations systemically disadvantage women. Even when controlling for grades and other factors, students (esp. males) consistently give female professors lower scores. This can have serious ramifications.🧵

BREAKING NEWS AT POMONA COLLEGE: 30+ cops have arrived on campus in full riot gear to arrest students who are currently trapped inside Alexander Hall. Earlier today, students initiated a sit-in in response to the administration violently confiscating their mock apartheid wall.

I wish we could stop worrying about whether something is intelligent or whether something is general, and just focus on whether something is useful, whether something helps people, and whether something moves society in a positive direction. >

It was an absolutely honor to contribute to the Data-Sitter's Club, which is a project I've always deeply admired. Shoutout to co-authors Sathvika (HMC '24) and Quinn for being so fun to work with on this.

Considering the mind-boggling amount of $$ flowing through #NLProc right now, it's surprising to hear that @WiNLPWorkshop has funding shortages. If your org has cash, please reach out to WiNLP to help them fund underrepresented authors at @emnlpmeeting!
