I'm really not interested in evoking pity. I'm more interested in humiliating anyone in positions of influence who brush off the seriousness of addressing these topics in masajid and madaris, instead leaving it to "specialists".
Because Allah is my witness that they'd act differently if their own daughter or wife or mother was the Algerian woman in this picture next to these French soldiers, amongst the underage girls and married women that were gang-raped and tortured till miscarriage.
But “the Ummah is one body” is what they'll tell you.
One of many cases of gang-rape by French soldiers towards Muslim women:
“Kheira Garne, Mohamed's biological mother, was 15 years old when she was taken to the Theniet El Had detention camp, where she was tortured and raped by soldiers of the French Army. After becoming pregnant, the soldiers tried to make her miscarry by kicking her in the stomach and continued to rape and abuse her throughout her pregnancy.
At his birth, Mohamed Garne was separated from Kheira because she was deemed incapable of caring for her child. He was entrusted to several wet nurses, under whose care he was very poorly treated. He was later found anorexic in a hospital in Algiers, with a skull fracture. Subsequently, a couple of writers decided to adopt him; however, when he was fifteen, the couple separated and forced him to return to the orphanage.
After a melancholic period marked by alcohol and self-harm, in 1986 Garne began searching for his biological mother. He found her one evening in September 1988 in the Algerian capital.”

Every system of knowledge in human history has been gatekept. You want philosophy learn Greek. You want law go to the academy. You want spirituality find the monastery, pay the priest, climb the hierarchy.

The shepherd in Mali and the caliph in Baghdad are doing the identical act. No priest can sell you access. No institution can revoke your membership. No scholar
can stand between you and the prayer.
The ulema exist, the imams exist but the core transaction between the believer and Allah requires nothing they can provide and nothing they can withhold.
1400 years later every other spiritual tradition is struggling with institutional collapse, abuse scandals, gatekeeping accusations. Islam built the decentralization solution into the architecture from day one.

The woman under modernity has to constantly live up to an ideal standard (usually western) of what a woman is, all women, all over the world have to do this, down to what they literally look like, or they’ll be banned from education itself
