Amazingly, onions are the only American agricultural commodity explicitly banned from futures trading.
This is thanks to an overzealous federal reaction to Chicago-based market manipulation in the late 1950s.
Now these heroic UChicago students are campaigning to overturn the Onion Futures Act of 1958.

The stock market is going to be nationalized instead of letting it collapse. This is the next bailout, and we're already underway.
Since ~2020, companies themselves have been the only net purchaser of stocks. Retirement funds have been net sellers since the 00's. Ditto the public. Ditto foreign investors. Ditto institutions. Companies are putting ~107% of free cash blow into stock buybacks. That's obviously unsustainable. They're doing it because they know big daddy government is coming to save them.
From Trump accounts to AI nationalization to Elon's "charity", the taxpayer will now be responsible for propping up stocks. That's how they'll get public support: instead of stimulus checks, they'll airdrop stocks into people's hands.
Per usual in these situations, people will think they're getting rich, not realizing prices at the grocery store will go up faster than their portfolios.

Imagine buying a game and the first screen says:
“Congratulations. You won.”
You’d ask for your money back.
You wanted the challenge.
You wanted to figure it out.
Maybe the struggle isn’t ruining the game.
Maybe the struggle is the game.

His dream, and the dream of millions more, is to eliminate property taxes, which will immediately boost the value of his home, and then take all that new equity out via a reverse mortgage and spend his golden years on a cruise ship - and leave nothing to his kids and grandkids.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Nearly every phone and computer on Earth relies on one plain-text file to know what time it is.
When a country changes its clocks with a few weeks’ notice, or Morocco pauses daylight saving for Ramadan, someone has to update that file. Since 02005, that someone has been Paul Eggert, a computer science professor at UCLA, who does it as a volunteer.
Take a look at this great data visualization to see the full story:

"The Brazilian Gold Rush"
In the early 1980s, gold was discovered on a remote farm in the state of Pará, Brazil. Word spread quickly, and 50,000 - 100,000 men abandoned their jobs, families, and homes in the hope of striking it rich.
What followed was extreme disorder: dozens of murders each month, along with rampant gambling, prostitution, fighting and drinking in the surrounding settlements.
The men pictured here in front of the makeshift district station at Serra Pelada are among those who risked their lives every day to uphold a fragile sense of order and justice amid the violence, desperation, and chaos of the gold rush.

Michael Douglas: “The disparity of wealth is very very depressing”
Joe Rogan: “It’s certainly frustrating that more people don’t have an opportunity to do better in this life and that no one’s paying attention to that. If you look at the country as a community, you would say okay if this is all our friends, why are so many of them living in abject poverty for decades upon decades? Why is there crime-ridden neighborhoods that never get better? They’ve been ignored. We could throw resources at fixing these spots and we don’t”
