Starting with things of little value—a bit of spilled oil, a little stolen wine—repeat to yourself: 'For such a small price, I buy tranquillity.'

I was playing around with gzip this evening, compressing some CSV files. And, to my surprise, it came back at 63% compressed! Over half the size without tuning the hyperparameters at all! Suffice it to say I am spooked. GZIP is sapient??!?!

Representing the @csa_asc on #Artemis II to the Moon is @Astro_Jeremy, from London, Ontario.
Jeremy Hansen was a fighter pilot before joining CSA, and currently works with NASA on astronaut training and mission operations. This will be Hansen’s first mission in space.

ALT Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen poses for a portrait in his orange Artemis flight suit. The suit has blue trim around the neck and shoulders, with three patches: one with the Canadian flag on his left shoulder, one with his name and a pair of wings on his chest, and one bearing the logo of the Canadian Space Agency faintly visible beneath the second. The background is dark, and the photo is lit to focus on Hansen’s face, which is facing the camera with a dignified expression. Credit: NASA

This quote is about governance but I feel the exact same way about type systems.
When I set out to write an instructional I often note that it ends up with a sort of negative tone. I think that may be because I mostly know wrong ways of doing things.

Hot take: Throwing an exception or aborting on overflow is a more reliable PL design choice than promoting to bignums on overflow. Usually overflow is a logic error, so it's better for the programmer to be notified of that.
