Imagine putting a medical query into a standard search engine and receiving a list of links including one to a local university medical center, one to WebMD, one to Dr. Oz, and one to an active forum for people with similar medical issues. >>

As OpenAI and Meta introduce LLM-driven searchbots, I'd like to once again remind people that neither LLMs nor chatbots are good technology for information access. A thread, with links: >>

#CovidIsNotOver This is my 15th semester teaching RN and NP students about Covid 19 pathophysiology. Not a lot has changed except for how much damage we now know the virus causes. It still baffles me that people don’t know it’s airborne, don’t know the risks. 1

New York City is under a drought watch. Here’s former Mayor Ed Koch in 1980 for the “Keep New York City Wet” campaign — maybe @NYCMayor should replicate it (via @LaGuardiaWagner youtu.be/WG9Bg9VFYE0?si=6kPm…)

Every human population has a small percentage of sociopaths, people who just dgasf about others. Egalitarian human societies developed strong mechanisms to curb and expel them, due to the danger they posed to all. Neoliberalism and capitalism promote them to the very top.

Violent political rhetoric precedes political violence. We’ve seen this story before: January 6, mass shootings at grocery stores and houses of worship, and the plot to kidnap and kill me. Each of these incidents was preceded by calls to arms, lies, or both. In four days, you have a choice between a guy with an enemies list who stokes violence or @KamalaHarris, a leader who will be president for all Americans. And the choice is clear—we must elect Vice President Harris.
Trump: Let's put Liz Cheney with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. Let's see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face

TRUMP: My political opponents should face a firing squad. HARRIS: Here’s my sixteen-point plan to directly target middle class families and help them succeed. NEW YORK TIMES: Both candidates trade barbs in the final week of the race.

Last night I couldn’t sleep (what’s new), so naturally I spent 3 hours going down the Twitter rabbit hole of white women in the suburbs who love Harris but are married to a male Trump supporter. It’s this whole other world of women of all ages sharing their plans and fears. 🧵

Today’s NYT featured a headline above the fold that read as follows: “Biden Misstep Delivers Grist to Harris Foes” This gets at one of the very worst things about the way political media has functioned during the Trump era. Here's a thread on the problem. 1/
They put their own, historic exclusive from retired marine general John Kelly—Trump’s own chief of staff calling him a fascist and danger to America—on A12.

One of the presidential campaigns is out here suggesting they'll end childhood vaccines if they win. Maybe we could spare a little more coverage on that as opposed to whether or not Biden used an apostrophe? Just a thought.

1. With less than a week to go before Election Day, let’s talk about expectations, specifically the common expectation that this shouldn’t be a close race.

In the United States, the media are trying to hold VP Kamala Harris accountable for what other grown people say, but they won’t hold a deranged orange criminal accountable for the vulgar shit he says on an hourly basis. That’s how racism and sexism work.

The @nytimes covered Trump’s "gig" at McDonald's in at least seven articles but missed this photo by Bucks County Herald freelance photographer Sara Pinkus. Pinkus, a retired bank manager who describes herself as a “photo enthusiast,” made the most telling image of the day.
