New home. New friends. Same Tank. 🐢 For everyone who’s been asking about our big guy, here’s your update! Tank is now known as Malibu Tank at Turtle & Tortoise Rescue of Arroyo Grande, where another Tank already had dibs on the name. His new neighbors include Lucky Luke the alpaca and goats Billy Bob and Daisy Mae. Quite the welcoming committee! When Susan moved closer to family, more than 80 turtles and tortoises from American Tortoise Rescue needed a new home. Jeff and Tammy welcomed them into their sanctuary, taking on their ongoing care alongside the many other animals who depend on them. We’re grateful to share this next chapter with you, and to shine a light on the people caring for the turtles who started it all. Want to help? Please consider supporting Turtle & Tortoise Rescue of Arroyo Grande and World Turtle Day by American Tortoise Rescue. From daily animal care to turtle education and awareness, there’s meaningful work to keep going. Show Arroyo Grande some love: turtleandtortoiserescueofarr… Or support our ongoing work at World Turtle Day here: worldturtleday.org/donate And maybe leave a little hello for Malibu Tank below? He may have a longer name now, but he’s still our Tank. 💚

Turtleween horror productions presents 'THE CROSSING' Getting to the other side of the road has never been scarier. Disclaimer: this is not a real movie, and if you are able to help a bud cross the road, make sure to put them in the direction they were already heading, don't pick them up by the tail (it can hurt them), and call for help if you need it!

Turtleween horror productions presents 'LEFT BEHIND' There's nothing scarier than being left behind when you don't know the environment, and don't know how to live without your human. Even scarier for the others in the ecosystem, you might be carrying a disease they can't survive. Disclaimer: this is not a real movie, and if you need help rehoming your buds check out our online resource: worldturtleday.org/learn/#re…

While we want to make sure to keep wild turtles wild, please don't ghost the turtle you've taken in as a pet! Turtles & tortoises are often a lifelong commitment, and we understand that things come up where you can no longer care for them. Releasing them into the wild (even if they were once part of that environment) can be harmful to the natural ecosystem, spread disease to local populations, and more likely than not, your turtle bud can no longer survive in the wild. Please fine a reputable rescue who can help you with relocating your bud! We've started a nationwide list of resources and people to call, but it's not exclusive to what's available. worldturtleday.org/learn/#re… And if you're a rescue or resource or vet or nonprofit or organization that can help please submit your information so we can continue building this list out!

Susan, the co-founder of American Tortoise Rescue AND World Turtle Day, always kept a statue of St. Francis of Assisi at the sanctuary, and there was always a turtle sitting at his feet. Everyone have a good @worldanimalday

Turtleween horror productions presents 'IT NEVER GOES AWAY' The scariest stories are the ones happening every day for turtles. Plastic pollution gets dumped in the waterways and ends up being mistaken for prey. Disclaimer: this is not a real movie, but it should be.

It's World Rabies Day! Turtles, tortoises, and all of our other cold-blooded buds don't contract or transmit rabies!! The rabies virus is only contracted and transmitted through mammals, which does include us humans. Make sure you get your pets vaccinated! There are many free and reduced cost clinics located on World Rabies Day and throughout the year. rabiesalliance.org/world-rab…

It's baby freshwater turtle season! (July through September) If you spot tiny turtle hatchlings, the best thing you can do is let them continue their journey in the wild. If one is crossing a road, you can safely help by moving it to the side of the road in the direction it was already heading. They know where they're going, and turning them around can reduce their chances of survival. Every little hatchling deserves the chance to grow up wild. 💚

This year's World Turtle Day was one for the books. Now that the excitement of the day, week, and month has settled down, we wanted to look back and share some of the moments that made this year's shellebration so special. One of the biggest highlights was when the @santamonicacity alongside Councilmember Natalya Zernitskaya, presented Susan with an official proclamation recognizing May 23, 2026, as World Turtle Day. It was an incredibly meaningful honor and a wonderful recognition of a day that has inspired millions of people around the world to shellebrate turtles, support conservation, and help protect these amazing animals for generations to come.
