“Now and then I am asked as to ‘what books a statesman should read,’ and my answer is, poetry and novels – including short stories under the head of novels. I don’t mean that he should read only novels and modern poetry. If he cannot also enjoy the Hebrew prophets and the Greek dramatists, he should be sorry. He ought to read interesting books on history and government, and books of science and philosophy; and really good books on these subjects are as enthralling as any fiction ever written.”

This is the Oxyrhynchus Hymn, dated to the late 200s AD. It is the earliest known Christian hymn manuscript with both lyrics and musical notation. A plain English rendering of the surviving words:
“Let all creation be silent.
Let the shining stars be still.
Let the rushing winds and rivers cease.
While we sing to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
let every power answer: Amen, amen.
Strength, praise, and glory forever to God,
the only giver of all good things. Amen, amen.”

Iraqi historian Omar Mohammed risked his life running the Mosul Eye archive from inside the city under ISIS—documenting executions, the destruction of heritage, and the systematic erasure of history. He later worked to recover Mosul’s long Jewish past. Then, after “Go back to Poland” was chanted at Jews, he went to Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Bełżec.
@geraldposner and I have written books about the Holocaust. We know the power of learning what actually happened in World War II.
A historian who archived one genocide standing at the site of another is a powerful read

Do I behold these steep and lofty cliffs,
Which on a wild secluded scene impress
Thoughts of more deep seclusion; and connect
The landscape with the quiet of the sky.
