The Poor Law Unions were established to assist those in need, the minute book entry from South Dublin Union in 1919 shows how the Board approved funds for a pair of glasses for a widow's daughter and boots for an old man, daily essentials they could not afford #WorkhouseWednesday

This statistical entry for Rathdown Union, 4th January 1845, showing the admission of paupers, illustrates that pre-famine the workhouse was not crowded with inmates with only 407/600 spaces occupied. In the next few years the system would be overwhelmed. #WorkhouseWednesday
