Great news out of California today! We all deserve to be able to take time to grieve those closest to us, including chosen family members. This expansion will be an important safeguard for many working Californians.

FCLCA supports SB 1149!
California caregiving laws recognize chosen and extended family relationships. It’s time for bereavement leave to do the same. SB 1149, introduced today by @SenMariaEDurazo would allow workers to take bereavement leave to grieve for a chosen or extended family member.

With paid leave now providing 70-90% wage replacement, more workers in California are using the program.“Sixty percent of their income wasn't enough to pay their bills, and so many people are living on the edge in this state especially,” Jenya Cassidy, CAWFC. @ellywyu @LAist

Among Americans who provide care to an adult 65 or older, more than 23% provide care for a friend, neighbor, or other unrelated person. Our bereavement leave laws should reflect the reality of caregivers. Follow us for updates about how you can support this bill!
