John Henderson has spent 30 years trading. One of his biggest lessons: knowing when to stop. “When it’s not your time, then it’s okay to chill out, you know, do some traveling, not trade.” You have a process that works. Then conditions change, the losses start building, and you take more trades to make the money back. You loosen your criteria. Try setups you normally wouldn’t take. Before long, you’ve moved away from the process that gave you an edge in the first place. John describes having multiple years of triple-digit returns when conditions aligned with his approach. But he also accepts that periods of underperformance come with a long trading career. The difficult part is recognising which environment you’re in and acting accordingly. When everything lines up, he wants to work hard and put on size. When the market doesn’t suit his process, he gives himself permission to step back. He admits he still has a tendency to overtrade. That’s why journaling matters: it helps him check whether he’s following his process or finding reasons to keep trading. It’s easy to explain away a bad week.
