A slave ship wrecked off the coast of Ecuador in 1553. The captives got ashore, went into the forest, and never went back into anyone's custody. Within a generation they governed the entire region — and the Spanish crown had to negotiate with them as a foreign power. Alonso de Illescas. He had been taken from Cape Verde as a boy and raised in Seville, which meant he spoke fluent Spanish and understood exactly how Spanish power worked. He was in his twenties when the ship went down. The survivors — around twenty-three people — allied and intermarried with local Indigenous communities and built a society in the Esmeraldas region that Spain could not penetrate. Illescas became its leader. He negotiated on equal terms. He refused to submit to encomienda. He accepted a formal royal pardon and title while giving up none of the actual autonomy. In 1599 the authorities in Quito commissioned a painting of three rulers of Esmeraldas — Black men in Spanish ruffs and Indigenous gold ornaments, carrying spears — and sent it to King Philip III of Spain as a report on who was in charge there. That painting still hangs in Madrid. Ecuador declared Alonso de Illescas a National Hero in 1997. A shipwreck produced a free Black republic on the Pacific coast, and the empire's own official portrait of it is in a Spanish museum.

A man in Boston shot his pregnant wife and told police a Black man had done it. The city believed him instantly — and then tore its own Black neighbourhood apart looking for someone who did not exist. October 1989. Within hours, police flooded Mission Hill. Over the following weeks Black men were stopped, searched, and strip-searched in the street. Homes were entered. Teenagers were pulled off basketball courts. A man named Willie Bennett was arrested and named publicly as the suspect. His family's home was raided. His name was in every newspaper in America. Stuart picked Bennett out of a line-up. Then Stuart's own brother went to the police and said he had helped dispose of the gun and the wife's belongings. Stuart died before he could be charged. Boston had spent nearly three months believing a story whose only evidence was that a white man had said a Black man did it. Willie Bennett was released. His life did not recover. In 2023 — thirty-four years later — the city of Boston formally apologised to Bennett, to his family, and to the Black residents of Mission Hill, and the police department acknowledged what it had done. One sentence from one man was enough to put a whole neighbourhood under occupation. It took the city a third of a century to say sorry for believing it.
