$800k in @CityofWS funds could easily bring the City-owned but ASPIRE-managed Plaza Apartments into the black. The Plaza Apts lose money and are in need of renovation. But owning the property gives the City options & a duty to keep affordable housing units in Boston-Thurmond.

One last point on the $800k temporary housing scheme at Weston Park: that's $800k more than the @CityofWS has ever spent on Crystal Towers. If you want to prevent homelessness in WSNC, invest in Crystal Towers, as Joines promised to do in January 2022, but never did.

.@CityofWS should consider pausing its temporary housing project at Weston Park. Instead, the Bethesda Center needs a cash injection and a long-term plan to balance its books. Bethesda Center in Winston-Salem Temporarily Suspending Shelter Services wxii12.com/article/bethesda-…

This looks like a terrible idea. @CityofWS plans to spend $800k on 15 temporary housing units in Weston Park, Southeast WSNC. The goal is to install a maximum of 15 housing units to be deployed for six-month intervals. As part of the implementation of the project, Weston Park will remain open to the public and will continue to function as a city park. Time Frame: The City of Winston-Salem anticipates deploying the temporary housing units during fall 2026. cityofws.org/m/newsflash/hom…

UPDATE: Chris Paul Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Rupert Bell Park mural has been moved to Friday, October 23rd at 10am (1501 Mount Zion Pl, Winston Salem, NC 27101) (According to ASPIRE's board docs).

.@CityofWS could easily refurbish/rebuild the Plaza Apts building by building until the entire complex is restored. The fact that the City and ASPIRE are losing a little money on the Plaza Apts is immaterial. The City loses money every day. That's how taxes +gov. budgets work.

.@CityofWS is working to gentrify Boston-Thurmond. If developers take the Plaza Apts and the vacant former Cook WS/FCS property, they could gentrify much of historic Boston-Thurmond. This is clearly @CityofWS prioritizing gentrification over affordable housing.

ASPIRE's September Plaza Apartment numbers: Occupancy: 92%; 6 vacancies • Rent billed: $42,932; collected: $47,716 • Waiting list: 9; late notices: 24; evictions filed: 0 • 7 incidents, 4 involving residents • 81 work orders created; 1 open at month end. @CityofWS doesn't have to sell this property.

Chris Paul is coming to Winston on Oct 24th. From ASPIRE's board documents: "A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Rupert Bell Park mural is planned for Saturday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m.• Chris Paul and his family are expected to attend."

Downtown Winston-Salem is mediocre at best. It's a guilded neighborhood that is undercut by unpleasant realities; homeless folks and addicts (largely products of the same capitalist system that 'revitalized' downtown).

Downtown Winston-Salem needs to get its act together [lock up the homeless folks and drug addicts] so Paul McLaughlin can feel safe. Got it!
