🎉 Happy Birthday to the United States Navy! ⚓
For 251 years, the Navy has answered the nation’s call—defending the seas and projecting American power and influence around the world.
Happy 251st Birthday, U.S. Navy. Here’s to the sailors who came before, those standing watch today, and the generations still to come. ⚓🇺🇸

Always loved the French SSBN naming tradition

USN appears to be distributing its medium-unmanned vessel contracts—and, by extension, technical know-how—across the shipbuilding sector rather than selecting a single winner.

The inclusion of neo-prime Saronic alongside the legacy shipbuilder HII is particularly notable. Galliano Marine Service, a commercial shipbuilder serving the oil industry, adds a third dimension.

On Saturday, Hot Spot Fishing Charters, a Pensacola-based charter fishing company found and recovered a large distinctive delta-wing unmanned aerial vehicle in the Gulf of America, several miles off the western coast of Florida.
The UAV, found by the charter group during a six-hour fishing tour, shares a striking resemblance with the Iranian Shahed-136, but is likely either a Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS) or a Griffon Aerospace MQM-172 Arrowhead, both of which are American-built and designed copies of the Shahed.
So far the U.S. Air Force and nearby Eglin Air Force Base have declined to comment on the discovery, with Hot Shot Charters stating that authorities arrived later in the day to retrieve the drone.

A new vessel spotted at a Chinese shipyard is likely the world’s first mothership designed to deploy submarine drones. It represents the latest piece in the puzzle of China’s undeclared effort to develop and deploy full-sized uncrewed submarines 🇨🇳

The arguments I’ve made against Seoul’s nuclear submarine push apply just as much to Japan as they do to ROK.
Interesting news. Yesterday, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed that Japan is keeping all options open regarding nuclear-powered submarines and revising core national security documents because of rapid naval expansion by China & North Korea.
Right now, they use conventional diesel-electric boats with newer ones like the pictured Taigei-class JS Jingei (SS-515) rely entirely on advanced lithium-ion batteries. Nuclear power is on another level though because a boat can stay completely hidden without ever coming up to recharge, maintain top speeds underwater indefinitely, and remain deployed for as long as the crew has food..
Pulling this off will be an uphill battle though. There's typically heavy pushback on nuclear military tech and they have strict defense-only and anti-nuclear laws. Plus, making the jump would be a massive expensive and would mean building new infrastructure and training programs from scratch. Still a very interesting development.
You can do a find & replace South Korea with Japan and most of my article still applies

This would be a massive mistake.
Our most capable allies should not spend billions on exquisite capabilities that take decades to develop when those limited defense dollars could be better invested in the technologies and capabilities that will define 21st-century warfare.
Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi on Friday reiterated that Japan is not ruling out acquiring nuclear-powered submarines, days after a U.S. Navy official reportedly offered a positive assessment of such a move. ebx.sh/MIxqWx

Just to bring everyone back down to earth a bit — last month’s waiver only removes one barrier (statutory prohibitions) to foreign warships.
Congress would still need to authorize and fund any foreign-built warships. Big if if you ask me!

Now I’m agnostic on this idea — no value judgement or opinion about if we should do it.
Just trying to encourage folks to not get all liquored up on an idea that has massive, massive headwinds.
