Extraordinary pitch for power, even by their standards. Vote for us and we will plunge you into civil war! But it’s for your own good…
A Restore Britain Government will do what needs to be done - civil unrest and rioting will inevitably follow. We must be ready for that, and the public must be prepared too. What needs to happen will be incredibly painful. But it is all absolutely necessary to save our home.

Nah, with this lineup, Ipswich can't even dream of scoring. This team will make them question why they became footballers. If they score one goal, I'll deactivate. I'm putting my reputation on the line for this.

Total transport breakdown today. Ipswich in gridlock for hours, then trains to London delayed almost an hour, then underground at a halting crawl. Broken (segment of) Britain!

The use of the word ‘recalls’ is quite odd here. It’s technically correct I suppose, but it makes it sound like either a) she now remembers this happened, having forgotten it or b) she’s ninety years old and regaling her grandchildren with the tale

Is it just me or do you hardly ever hear about the Archbishop of Canterbury these days? And if so, it is as simple as that coinciding with a woman taking over the role? Of those in place since I was conscious of the news, the four prior to Mullally seemed to be covered frequently

I think a good time and place for a hedgehog would have been running the country from 2010-2024 but instead we had Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak, none of whom was manifestly better at that job than a hedgehog.
I love a hedgehog but there is a time and a place for them. We are not nursery children - please can we have inspirational people from the past who have contributed to our country back on our bank notes please @bankofengland. Let’s be proud of our history and recognise it on our legal tender.

Thinking about this in relation to Will Davies recent excellent piece on similar lines - if economic conditions create, necessitate, and allow ways of thinking, communicating, interpreting the world, are we now solely in the era of the "influencer"? willd10.substack.com/p/what-…
With the recent deaths of so many of the great Marxist thinkers of recent decades –– Jameson, Mike Davis etc, and now Chris Wickham –– i do worry about who will replace them, considering the conditions that allowed them to thrive and produce such generative work no longer exist

Karl Kautsky once wrote about the sheer difficulty of writing history from the perspective of historical materialism. It's not just history-from-below or 'social justice' positioning, but a reach to structured totality. It's fair to say, I think, that Chris Wickham pulled it off.

RIP Chris Wickham. Unlike so many historians who emphasise particularities and contingencies, he was the master of constructing grand, coherent, beautifully rendered worlds out of his evidence. This, from his 2021 Past and Present essay, is a masterpiece of historical writing.

Absolutely 100% correct. A bad-faith culture war faux-gotcha deflection. Nailed it completely.
