The loss of glaciers causes concerns for downstream #watersecurity, but they are not the only contributors to downstream water availability. Our new paper led by @TomGrib quantifies wetland contributions to streamflow in glacierized river basins in Peru. dx.doi.org/10.1002/hyp.15237

Interested in joining our research team to explore how new sensor technologies can support climate resilience and water security in the Global South? #PhDposition with @hydrogeom_lab at @UK_CEH imperial.ac.uk/media/imperia…
Some engineering problems need a bit of out-of-the-box thinking and creativity. Testing new sensors for flood early warning in stubborn rivers is definitely one of those. Thanks @liz_stephens and @UgandaRedCross for giving us the opportunity.

Recently, I returned from a great second trip to #Lima, #Peru, where I have been conducting a series of semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders. Thank you @_CONDESAN and @foresttrendsorg for welcoming me and being my first point of contact to conduct the interviews!
Exciting 1st paper out from our @Grantham_IC research in Somaliland. We've simulated water levels in rural shallow wells for drought early warning, using in-situ observations from modern groundwater sensors.

We conclude that short, 1-2 month monitoring periods can calibrate simple groundwater models that substantially improve estimations of local water availabilities during drought.
These local simulations can provide evidence to guide anticipatory actions that mitigate shortages...
With thanks to partners @ConcernUK, BRCiS, @Mowrdsl & @FAOSomalia SWALIM. Supervisors @WouterBuytaert, @apbutler & collaborators @topicster @simmoulds.
More to come as we now continue stakeholder interviews establishing how groundwater data can add value to early warning systems

A truly special 2 weeks in Somaliland, where we are evaluating the potential for modern sensors to provide real-time groundwater info to the national drought Early Warning System.
So grateful to the local Ministry of Water (MoWD) & @ConcernUK for your active support
