Already thinking about summertime grilling? Is one type of charcoal—lump or briquette—better than the other? To find the answers, America's Test Kitchen asked Forest Products Laboratory fire science researchers to fire-up their lab and burn some charcoal.

Let’s talk about fire and tree physiology 🔥🌲🔥. Check our work 👇about fire effects on tree water and carbohydrates! 🔥🌲💧🌲🔥@pyroecophys @TreePhysDJ @EnvEcoLab @ecofiz1 @WildfirePhysics @pyrogeog – at Vancouver, British Columbia
Death from hunger or thirst? Phloem death, rather than xylem hydraulic failure, as a driver of fire-induced conifer mortality @RaquelFeltrin @pyroecophys @GeogUidaho @uidaho @UIdahoCNR

ALT Phloem and xylem cross-sections of Pinus ponderosa saplings exposed to lethal fire intensity. Cross-sections of unburned (a) and burned (b) plants in Experiment 1 show similar nonheat-induced damaged xylem cell walls (arrows). Cross-sections of unburned (c, e) and burned (d, f) plants in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively.

To set where we are now this year vs. last year in perspective . . . this time last year we had 17 large wildfires burning 72,952 acres. Same time this year? 32 large wildfires burning 840,000 acres. There is absolutely no room for new human-caused fires now! Please do your part
Remember that last time you waited to long to eat and got a bit hangry? Turns out wildland fires can be sensitive to when you feed them as well. Check out our recent publication on sensitive fires.
