I love sharing the #wildlife of the #WestCork coast on our guided Discover Wildlife Walks. I have two half-day walks scheduled in Rosscarbery, West Cork over the coming week, with limited places available. See irelandswildlife.com/walks, for info and to book. #birding #Ireland
My first Swallow of the 2026 flew by yesterday evening (04 March). Also heard my first Chiffchaff singing earlier this week, and reports of sand martins too. It's not quite summer yet, but migrants are arriving, so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled! (Photo from a previous year).
How did these little worms find their way into a nestbox 3.5m up a silver birch tree in the Ireland's Wildlife garden?

Meet the December Moth, spotted in west Cork by our @biodatacentre colleague Ann Haigh
Whilst not technically a pollinator (it doesn't feed as an adult, relying on reserves stored up from its time as a caterpillar), this is one of the few moths you might see in the winter ❄️💚

Northern Parula at Firkeel Glen, Co. Cork this morning. The fourth record for Ireland but the first twitchable since 1983! I can’t believe I’ve seen one in Ireland! I’m still pinching myself 😂 found yesterday by Kieran Grace. @BirdGuides

It’s not just west cork that sprat overfishing happens, Donegal bay will be next to see a collapse in stock (and then local marine mammal loss, which will be huge hit on tourism the same as west cork) this humpback was taken this week in Donegal bay, one of 7 in the bay at moment
Great to see our march information posters popping up all over #WestCork & #Cork. Join us on August 13th at 1345 in #Clonakilty & march to #SaveOurSprat.

Great to see this bill being introduced by @WhitmoreJen yesterday.
Sprat are a key food source for much of our marine wildlife🐳🐬🦭
Yet it has been fished intensively without a quota or plan. A moratorium is needed to collect & process the data to support a sustainable quota.

Not very comfortable in front of the camera -- but @SaveOurSpratWC and @saveoursprat are fighting for something critical to the survival of not just our marine wildlife, but of the marine ecosystem the viability of our coastal communities depends on.
Please follow and support!
