Here's the trick:
Don't try to understand the entire codebase.
Pick one component, trace how a request flows through it, and follow the code.
Reading production code is a skill worth developing.

I've been interviewing DevSecOps candidates recently.
Plenty knew Trivy. Far fewer could explain the checks around it, or which ones should block a build.
The vocabulary worth knowing before your next interview.
Secret scanning looks at keys and tokens in code and Git history. It runs pre-commit and on pull requests, and it usually blocks.
SAST reads your own source for unsafe patterns. It runs on pull requests; teams block high-confidence criticals and warn on the rest.
SCA checks third-party dependencies for known CVEs and licences, and blocks criticals that have a fix.
Image scanning does the same inside the container image: OS packages and libraries.
An SBOM is a list of every component you shipped. It's an inventory, not a scan, and it's how you answer "are we affected?" in minutes when the next big CVE drops.
DAST probes the running app from outside, usually in staging. It warns per pull request and gates releases.
Policy as code checks config, IaC and manifests against your rules, and blocks at admission: root containers, unsigned images.
Then expect the follow-up: walk me from commit to production, in order. Where does each check run, and what credentials does the pipeline use?

Hardware looks scary until you break it down into small steps. So I built an app that takes you through Arduino one circuit at a time.

Introducing SKY-001, the first Engineering World Model.
On CAD and BIM tasks, it beats GPT-6 Astra and every frontier model we tested:
-> 51-125x faster
- > 150-210x cheaper
-> Higher IOU than all frontier models
SKY-001 lets you dream a physical object before you build it.
18 months of work. Built by the team out of Maluuba's deep learning lab (acq. by @MSRResearch).

How to build a DevOps project you can actually explain in interviews
1. Start with a small app. An API and a database are enough. You don't need to spend weeks building features before you get to the infra.
2. Set up the deployment. Build the image, add CI checks, logs and metrics. Test that you can roll back, don't just put it in the README.
3. Break something in a test environment. Stop the database or give the app a wrong config. Check what fails, look through the logs and get it running again.
4. Write down what you tried. Include what didn't work, what finally fixed it and why you chose that fix.
Keep the README honest: what works, what you've tested and what you haven't figured out yet.
