ALT Text: Today Marks 113 years since Wales' (and the UK'S) most deadly mining disaster. On the morning of October 14th 1913, there were 950 men working 2000ft below ground at Senghenydd's coal face. Just after 8am, around two hours into the shift, two massive explosions occured, loud enough to be heard in Cardiff 11 miles away. These were most likely the result of coal dust in the air ignited by a spark from signalling equipment. Fire ripped through the mine.

ALT Text: 439 men and 1 rescuer were killed - by the explosion, the fires, the roof collapses and by asphyxiation from the poisonous gases. Image: Hours after the disaster, police men taken a coffin after rescuers had saved the body.

ALT Text: Over 300 of the dead were from Senghenydd itself, some as young as 14. It's said that every family in Senghenydd lost at least one member; many lost multiple. One woman lost a husband, four sons and free brothers; and a boy named David Jones lost his father, grandfather, two brothers, two brothers-in-law and two uncles. ALT Text: PREVENTBALE. Like many industrial accidents, this tragedyshould have been avoided. Enquiries following a series of mining explosions in South Wales in the late 19th century, including one at Senghenydd in 1901 that killed 81 miners, led to the development of the 1911 Coal Mines Act. This new act specified that ventilation fans had to be installed in all collieries and that measures must be taken to dampen the extremely flammable airborne coal dust.

ALT Text: In the enquiry that followed the disaster, the owners of the colliery were cleared of all charges against them and the managed was found guilty of five charges relating to safety measures and was fined just £24. Newspapers at the time reported that each miner was worth just a shilling each, or the equivalent of 5.5p per dead miner in today's money.

ALT COFIWCH GRESFORD On this day 92 years ago, an explosion in the Dennis shaft at the Gresford Colliery near Wrecsam led to the deaths of 266 men and boys. They were sent down that pit to feed the furnaces of an empire that took everything from them and gave them nothing. This preventable disaster still scars the community to this day, and will only begin to heal when the explotation and neglect that caused it come to an end.

ALT THE GRESFORD DISASTER You’ve heard of the Gresford disaster, And the terrible price that was paid. Two hundred and forty-two colliers were lost, And three men of a rescue brigade. It occurred in the month of September, At three in the morning, that pit Was racked by a violent explosion In the Dennis where gas lay so thick. The gas in the Dennis deep section Was packed there like snow in a drift, And many a man had to leave the coal-face Before he had worked out his shift. A fortnight before the explosion. To the shotfirer, Tomlinson cried: “If you fire that shot we’ll be all blown to hell!” And no one can say that he lied. The fireman’s reports they are missing. The records of forty-two days; The colliery manager had them destroyed To cover his criminal ways. Down there in the dark they are lying, They died for nine shillings a day. They have worked out their shift and now they must In the darkness until Judgement Day.

Welsh people’s interest in independence is in taking control of those things. This means genuine independence is off the table. Any “powers” given to Wales are power in name only: Westminster and its capitalist paymasters can overrule us at will. Any “independence” given to us will also be in name only: British capitalists will still rule us. Westminster will never allow the vast majority of the Welsh people, the working class, to take control of the society we live in. True independence will not be given to us, we will take it. Only an organised working class can deliver national liberation. FORWARDS TO A SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF WALES!
