Calling for true regional rugby that includes the whole of Wales. Every club and fan equally. Fully integrated and aligned. We'd be so much stronger together.

Love Llanelli, Neath, Swansea, Cardiff & Newport, but EVERY PART OF WALES IS IMPORTANT. Every club and every fan. So, let's… stop the bickering - include everyone - work together - tap into every resource - and finally fulfil our potential.

It's absolutely insane that people are still talking about Welsh rugby being able to afford 4 pro sides. Genuinely delusional. Would be amusing if it wasn't so sad. Welsh rugby is dead. It's been killed by a 23 (or 31) year long pig-headed refusal to do regional rugby properly.
“Welsh rugby should be asking itself what it needs to do to stay at four” 🏉 Scarlets managing director John Daniels discusses the WRU’s proposed plans to cut a region on the Scrum V podcast. Listen on BBC Sounds 🎧 #BBCRugby #Rugby

Fantastic from Bordeaux Bègles. Back to back Champions Cup winners. Maybe mergers can work? Maybe resource concentration makes sense?

Time to bring back East Wales too? Huge sacrifices are needed to save Welsh rugby & this should not fall on West Wales alone. Especially as the 2 West teams took regionalism & inclusion far more seriously. They have also been more successful & haven't needed WRU financial rescue.

Totally get how hard this is for Scarlets & Ospreys - but the fantastic clubs & communities of what Welsh rugby has often designated "West Wales" have come together before & they can do it again. Merging both pathways into 1 new regional team would be far better than a culling.

(1/4) There's a limit to how much money the WRU can generate - and to how much of that total pot they can give to our pro teams (without underfunding the other crucial parts of the Welsh rugby ecosystem).

Fantastic piece. 👍 There is ONLY ONE WAY that Welsh rugby can ever be truly "collective", "connected" and "aligned". And that's by working together on a true regional system at pro level that includes ALL OF WALES - and sits between our historic clubs and the national side.

If Wales can afford to keep 4 pro teams (highly unlikely) - then these should be true regional entities that include ALL OF WALES and sit between our historic clubs & the national side. There's nothing bold about persevering with the defective structure that caused this crisis.

Sadly, that is the reality. Continuing with 4 is totally out of the question. And the sooner everyone accepts that the better. Then we can start sensibly discussing how to reduce to 3. East, West & North is by far the best option for a coherent 3 team system. 👍

Would be nice if all Welsh clubs and fans were treated equally. Would be nice if every part of Wales was fairly included by true regional teams at professional level. When will you be making an honest public statement about this kind of equality and inclusion please?

Absolutely brilliant from Sam. The guy has so much integrity & really cares deeply about what's best for Welsh rugby as a whole. So good to hear him being open about the coach and the financial director also being keen on the idea of merger to form a massive East Wales team. 👍

15 successive 6N defeats. Another commendable performance. Really proud of all the boys. The effort was immense, but sadly it’s just not enough. We have to structure our national rugby pyramid correctly. Let’s work together properly. EAST Wales + WEST Wales + NORTH Wales.

Bizarre from @SeneddCultureIR The @SeneddWales represents ALL OF WALES The @WelshRugbyUnion represents ALL OF WALES The 4 "regions" represent only small parts of South Wales. It's time for unity. It's time for collaboration. It's time for a fully inclusive regional system.

14 successive 6N defeats. It has never been more obvious that this defective “regional” system has caused Welsh rugby to implode. Time for a proper regional system. Let’s work together and restructure. 3 teams covering all of Wales… EAST Wales + WEST Wales + NORTH Wales.

13 successive 6N defeats. That’s what happens when you underfund player development - instead wasting vast sums of money keeping this faulty 4 team system on life support. Time to restructure properly - 3 teams covering all of Wales. EAST Wales + WEST Wales + NORTH Wales.

Spot on Paul. 👍 There isn't enough money for 4 teams. ❌ Makes no sense to cull the most successful region. ❌ Makes no sense to remove pro rugby from the 2nd largest population centre. ❌ There's no long term thinking. Just self preservation. 😞 xitter.cf/WelshRugbyUnity/status…
This is all true - but should it be about who's in a stronger position at this moment - or the best system for long-term sustainable success (& for Welsh rugby as a whole)? Pro rugby should stay in Cardiff & Swansea. Next cab off the rank would be a Newport v North Wales debate.

Regional or provincial rugby is a complete package. It doesn't work if you mix regional teams in with standalone historic clubs. The current system is messy and incoherent and inefficient. It has been given far more money than it deserves and it has failed beyond all question.

That's spot on. We haven't heard anything close to a viable alternative. Carrying on with 4 is totally out of the question. Every sane observer knows that. And wanting ALL OF WALES (the WRU) to pay for Llanelli, Cardiff & Newport superclubs is totally out of the question too.

It's a collective action problem - when individuals (or clubs) acting in their own self-interest produce an outcome that is worse for everyone. Rational individual behavior (self preservation) can often lead to collectively irrational outcomes (harming Welsh rugby as a whole).

12 successive 6N defeats. A new national record. Any Welsh rugby fan with any level of integrity & intellectual honesty should now be calling loudly and repeatedly for a proper restructuring - with 3 teams covering every part of Wales. The WRU optimal solution + North Wales

Last 4 Six Nations - played 20, won 2. 2022 - lost 4, won 1 (Sco) 2023 - lost 4, won 1 (Ita) 2024 - lost 5 2025 - lost 5 Back-to-back Wooden Spoons for the 1st time. National record of 11 successive 6N defeats. And still fans oppose structuring our national pyramid properly. 😔
