Sheriff’s Office Investigates $200K Vendor Fraud Weld County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies investigated a fraud earlier this month involving a local business in the 12900 block of Weld County Road 78, near Eaton. The business reportedly made approximately $200,936.23 in payments over several months to a vendor they later discovered was fraudulent. In June of this year, the victim received an email from one of the company’s vendors requesting a change in payment details and asking that future payments be made to a different account. Over the next four months, the business made several payments and continued communicating with the vendor as usual, only to recently discover the payments had been going to a fraudulent party rather than the legitimate vendor. This case is being actively investigated by a WCSO detective. We recommend that business owners and/or payroll staff who receive requests to unexpectedly change payment information for vendors to contact them directly to verify the change before making any updates, to ensure the request is legitimate. If you have any information that could lead to an arrest in this case please call our tip line at (970) 304-6464 or email our tip line at [email protected].

Failure-to-Comply Warrant Leads to Arrest On Sept. 28, just after 8:30 A.M. a Weld County patrol deputy arrested 43-year-old Chelsea Linn on a failure to comply warrant. The failure-to-comply warrant issued for Linn was tied to the specific license plate registered to Linn and assigned to a Honda-CRV. Days later, on Sept. 28, a patrol deputy received a warrant alert from our Flock cameras near East I-25 Frontage Road and Sable Ave. The warrant alert included the specific license plate assigned to the Honda-CRV, that is registered to Linn and the active warrant for failure to comply. The deputy confirmed in the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) that the warrant was valid and extraditable. While checking nearby business parking lots, the deputy found the Honda-CRV parked in front of a business in the 4400 block of City Centre Road, in Firestone. The deputy positively identified Linn sitting in the driver's seat of vehicle and arrested her for the active warrant. Keeping Weld County safe through investigating and tracking individuals with active warrants continues to be a priority for the sheriff’s office. All charges are merely accusations, and a defendant is presumed innocent until, unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Scammer Impersonates Deputies, Steals $5,000 from Local Resident Deputies responded to a call for service regarding fraudulent activity on Sept. 25, just after 7 P.M. The scammer called the victim from a “no caller ID” phone number and told the victim she had federal warrants for her arrest, and she needed to pay $9,000. The scammer identified himself as, “Deputy Justin Lewis” and indicated the warrants were issued by, “Judge Julie Hoskins” for not appearing in court. The caller told the victim not to hang up, and if she tried to pay the money at the sheriff’s office or courthouse, she would get arrested. The victim indicated the caller was believable because he knew all her information. Eventually, the victim became suspicious of the situation and began to ask the caller questions. The scammer reportedly transferred her call to a “Chief” and the phone number that showed up was (970) 356-4015 (a legitimate phone number for WCSO). This caller pressured the victim and told her if she did not deposit the money, she would get arrested. The victim ultimately deposited $5,000 into a Bitcoin machine and was stopped from depositing anymore money by the Greeley Police Dept. The Eaton Police Dept also contacted the victim at the request of her spouse to assist her. Prevention Tips: •Please don’t always put so much faith in your caller ID. Scammers often spoof legitimate phone numbers so their schemes appear genuine. We recommend hanging up and calling the sheriff’s office to verify information like this. •Many websites have public information that scammers use to lure you into a sense of belief that they are a legitimate person of authority. •The sheriff’s office will never call you regarding warrants. We will never call you to pressure you for money, and no one can pay to avoid being arrested if you have a warrant. •If you receive a call like this, please still report it to your local law enforcement, the information you provide may assist current or future victims. •WCSO also will not ask, and does not accept payments via gift cards, prepaid cards, money transfer applications like Cash App, Zelle, PayPal, or Venmo. We also won’t ask you to wire any funds through Western Union or any banking institution, and we won’t accept payments via QR codes or ask you to go to any kind of kiosk, like Bitcoin to make a payment. These payment methods are all hallmarks of someone trying to scam you, so please keep these tips in mind, and don’t fall for it. #staysafeweldcounty

WCSO drone assists in apprehension of wire theft suspect [Weld County, Colo.] Two people were arrested over the weekend following an investigation into a wire theft. WCSO patrol utilized drone technology which provided rapid and efficient support in locating one of the suspects. On Sept. 25, shortly before 9 P.M. patrol responded to a trespass in progress at a business in the 800 block of 25th Ave. Once on scene, deputies obtained a description of a female suspect that reportedly entered the property and took cooper wire from the business. A WCSO drone was deployed to search for the suspect, and soon after, the drone pilot observed a female walking south of the Poudre River Trail on North 25th Ave that appeared to match the description. Deputies contacted the female, who was identified as 39-year-old Karina Anderson. Deputies also contacted a Jeep parked on the west side of 25th Ave by the Poudre Trail where the female suspect was reportedly last seen. The male driving the Jeep was later identified as 49-year-old Jarrod Lebsack. After interviewing Lebsack, deputies initially believed he was not involved in the crime, and he left the scene shortly after he was contacted. During the investigation, deputies discovered a large cut in the business owner’s fence several feet from where the location was that the wire was taken from. Deputies also recovered the wire from the attempted theft valued at approximately a little over $4,000 dollars and other items that would have assisted Anderson in committing the crime. Anderson was arrested on suspicion of: •Possession Of Burglary Tools •Theft - $2,000 - $5,000 •Criminal Mischief $300 - $1000 Business •Second Degree Criminal Trespass Later in the investigation, probable cause was established to arrest Lebsack in connection with this incident. On Sept. 27, Lebsack was taken into custody during a traffic stop on suspicion of: •Conspiracy to commit Felony Theft All charges are merely accusations, and a defendant is presumed innocent until, or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
