A school bus driver got fired because a 10-year-old rescued a kitten. She's 67, she drove those kids for 11 years, and the letter firing her wasn't even addressed to her.
Cynthia Morgan stopped her bus on a quiet road in Pylesville, Maryland so the kid could grab an injured kitten off the shoulder. He held it the whole ride to school. She kept it on her lap after that. The bus camera caught all of it, and within days she was off the route.
Now here's the part that got buried.
Harford County schools never actually employed her. She drives for a contractor called Cleary Transportation, so the firing happened as a letter from the district's transportation director to the company. Two offices traded paperwork and an 11-year veteran was gone. Nobody ever had to sit across a table from her.
Districts outsource bus routes partly for this exact reason. When something goes sideways, getting rid of the driver costs one letter.
And look, the rule she broke is a real rule. Kids are incredibly safe inside a school bus. The deaths happen in the few feet around it, which is why letting a student step off mid-route gets treated as a hard line no matter the reason. The district enforced the one rule its whole safety record sits on.
Which is why the 630 people who signed the petition are pushing on a door with no handle. The district can say, truthfully, that she was never their employee. The contractor can point right back at the district's letter. Nobody has to own the decision, because the whole setup was built so nobody would.
Meanwhile the kid's own mom, the one person this rule exists to protect, is the loudest voice calling the firing cruel.
