Her legacy lives on in the community she helped shape 🌵 A new mural in Tucson honors Lorraine Lee, a community leader whose work brought people together and helped create lasting change. Lorraine spent 25 years with CPLC, creating opportunities for families across our communities. From expanding access to education and affordable housing to supporting young leaders and small businesses, she mobilized her community to respond to the needs of families. This mural celebrates Lorraine’s dedication to her work. Her legacy and impact can still be seen in the lives she helped move forward.

Celebrating Our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters 🌵 Did you know? The Las Vegas Paiute Tribe traces their ancestry back to the Tudinu people in 1100 AD and resides in what we now call Las Vegas, Nevada. Despite harsh conditions, they knew how to survive in the desert. Learn more at lvpaiute.gov. Since 2013, the Quapaq Nation of Oklahoma has worked to clean up the toxic waste from more than 70 years of mining in Oklahoma. After more than 10 years of work, they are now herding cattle and cultivating wheat and corn. Read more about it at the Good News Network! Learning about each other is the first step to growing closer in community. So today, let’s take a moment to learn about our joys and our struggles—and how we can show up for each other. Because we have a long way to go Hacia el Sol. But we’re still dreaming.

“All the challenges that we go through teaches us how to get strong.” 💛 At our Anniversary Celebration, Delma Herrera accepted the Cause for Change award and shared what those challenges have taught her. She came to this country at five years old, not knowing the language. Years later, she would become an executive at Cox Communications and serve on the CPLC Board of Directors, including two years as Chair. But for Delma, giving back is personal. As a little girl, she watched CPLC help her aunt, a single mother raising her family. That experience stayed with her. She returned to CPLC because she wanted to make sure another family could find that same kind of help when they needed it. Today, Delma continues to give her time, leadership and voice to that commitment. We’re proud to honor Delma Herrera with the Change for Cause award and grateful for the years she has spent serving our communities. Thank you to our sponsors @apsFYI, @HUBInsurance, @SouthwestAir, Spectrum, @LaCampesina1019, @latricolor1035, @LaVozaz, and @UniAZb2b

He made the numbers impossible to ignore 📊 At our Anniversary Celebration, we honored Sol Trujillo with the Legacy for Change award for the work he has done to bring Latino contributions to our economy into focus. Sol has advised two U.S. presidents on trade policy and built an international career as a business leader. Along the way, he has used data and his influence to make sure the economic contributions of Latinos are part of the conversation. When the numbers tell the story, it becomes harder to overlook the businesses, workers and communities behind them. Congratulations to Sol Trujillo, our Legacy for Change honoree. We’re proud to celebrate the work he continues to do. Thank you to our sponsors @apsFYI, @HUBInsurance, @SouthwestAir, Phoenix IDA, @playddcphx, @buzzrxcard, @MerrillLynch, @BallardSpahrLLP, @botcoai, @PHLYINS, RDF, @WAllianceBank, Herrera Arellano LLP, @jpmorgan, @gobankffb, @ValleywiseHthF, @nbarizona, @HonorHealth, @Airbnb, Foothills Bank, Fisher, Radar Strategies, @Marsh_MMA, and @TofelDent

We are so proud of our CPLC LUCES staff! They were recognized with the Latino Pride Alliance Community of Color Award – Con Orgullo, Corazón y Valor 💐 Each day, our team helps people find new hope for a happy, healthy, and long life. And through initiatives like the Manos de Esperanza and New Perspectives support groups, we are challenging stereotypes and knocking down stigmas of what it means to live with HIV/AIDS. Duvia Lozano and the LUCES team deserve this recognition. Thank you so much for all you do in our community to change perspectives and help people find new hope 🦋🌱

“That’s the one thing no one can take away: hope.” 💛 At our Anniversary Celebration, Alicia Núñez put it simply. She spoke about a student working toward her dreams while a college tuition balance stood in the way. A balance on a bill can prevent a student from reaching the finish line, unless someone steps in to help. That's what your support means for a student like her. Thank you to our sponsor @apsFYI, @HUBInsurance, @SouthwestAir, @AZDC_Consulting, @WellsFargo, Tiffany and Bosco P.A., @SRPconnect, @PNCBank, @BMO, @AzCHealthPlan, Road Forward, @UHC, @CVSHealth, guests, and everyone in our community who joined us for the evening to help keep those doors open.

The people who keep this work moving don’t always find themselves in the same room 💛 Our 57th Anniversary Dinner gave us that chance. Throughout the year, our partners, supporters and staff see different parts of the work happening across our communities. The Dinner brought us together to recognize the role each plays in that work. At the heart of the evening was a shared commitment to the communities we serve and the belief that we all have a role in helping them thrive. Thank you to our sponsors @apsFYI, @HUBInsurance, @SouthwestAir and to everyone who joined us and continues to believe in the work we’re doing together.

“We each give something to each other.” – CPLC Board Chair, Alex Varela 🫶 Tonight, at CPLC's Anniversary Dinner, we came together to celebrate 57 years of giving back. Together, we honored Sol Trujillo and Delma Herrera for the lives their work has touched, and gathered with the people who continue to give their time, generosity and support to families in our communities. Somewhere in that room was the next donation that will become a toy in a child’s hands this holiday season. The next family who will find help when they need it. Someone who came wanting to give something of themselves, only to recognize a piece of their own story in the people they came to support. What our community gave in that room won’t stay there. And for that, we are deeply grateful. Thank you to our presenting sponsor, @apsFYI.

We had a pretty good reason to step onto the court last night 🏀💜🧡 At halftime of yesterday’s Phoenix Mercury game, the CPLC Community Center received an $11,000 check as part of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup. Our team got to stand at center court while thousands of fans filled the seats around us. Then we brought that moment back home with us, where this support will continue the work happening every day at our Community Center. Thank you to the Phoenix Mercury and the WNBA for making room for our community on the court.

¡Feliz Independencia! 📷 This month, Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile, Belize, are celebrating their independence from Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal. It may have been more than 500 years ago, but we are still reconciling our history and making intentional choices about what we want to carry forward. Today, we celebrate our resilience, our strength, and our spirit that despite everything, continues to rise Hacia el Sol. Because we’ve been here before. We know how to survive, how to create joy out of despair, and how to keep walking through the dark fog. And so, we keep dreaming📷

Our seniors brought the heat for El Grito at Casa de Primavera 🌶️🏆 Yesterday, Casa de Primavera welcomed Hispanic Heritage Month with El Grito, bringing our seniors together to celebrate the traditions we continue to carry with us. It didn’t take long for the homemade salsa to come out and the competition to get serious. Our seniors put their recipes to the test in front of some special guest judges from the @AZCardinals, including Evan Hull and LJ Collier. Each salsa got its turn at the table until one finally earned the title of Casa de Primavera salsa champion. Once the winner was crowned, the music kept playing as everyone settled back around the tables for a meal. Before long, our seniors were back on their feet dancing. The recipes we carry bring us back to kitchens we remember and the people who once cooked for us. Every time we make them again, we pass a little bit of that history around the table.

Pouring a little more into our community ☕ The Starbucks Foundation awarded CPLC a $2,000 Neighborhood Grant, thanks to local Starbucks partners who nominated our work in recognition of the impact they see in their community. That support helps strengthen the programs our volunteer Promotoras help bring to life at the CPLC Community Center. Throughout the month, they tend the garden and prepare produce bags for food distributions, making sure fresh food reaches families. This Neighborhood Grant will help support programs and initiatives that make work like this possible. Thank you to the Starbucks partners who nominated us and to The Starbucks Foundation for investing in the work happening every week at the CPLC Community Center. #TheStarbucksFoundation #NeighborhoodGrants

Chicanos Por La Causa offers condolences to family, friends and colleagues of George Dean, whose lifework will continue to impact generations of yesteryear, today and tomorrow. His legendary leadership at Greater Phoenix Urban League helped make the dream of homeownership, employment, and education possible – especially for our most challenged communities. Dean believed in the power of team, including help forming the black and brown coalition to attack red-lining for people of color. His vision perhaps was surpassed only by his actions regarding Head Start, affordable housing and civil rights. Dean will be missed, but his contributions to families and community will forever be evident and alive. Godspeed.
