We are thrilled to welcome two new land partners to the Loch Abar Mòr fold, committing a further 10,000 acres to nature restoration. 🎉
Both Glenuig Estate in the west of the region, and Drimnin Estate in Morvern, are committed to the Loch Abar Mòr vision of creating a rich mosaic of habitats alive with nature, in which people work and live with a sense of pride and belonging. 🌿🌊🗻

These photos are of the same Downy willow, with one taken in September 2021, and one in December this year. Snow cover is important for montane willows as it provides protection for the plant through the long winter months, and also a flush of nutrients in the spring.

So #NewYearPlantHunt is over for another year.
Please send in all your records by Sunday so we can analyse them & report back.
Meanwhile here's our Day 4 round-up: what we know so far, messages from the Hunt founders & a shout-out to the Support Team!

Doing the #NewYearPlantHunt @BSBIbotany while on a walk through Glen Quoich in #Deeside. No surprise that only two plants were #flowering up here, but it was lovely to see classic #Pinewood understory species Ling Heather (Calluna vulgaris) & Bell Heather (Erica cinerea)!
Delighted that my #PhD #research at @StirlingScience @StirUni features in this uplifting article in The Guardian! Wonderful recognition of 30+ years of restoration action for montane willows across Scotland, also spotlighting #NTSBenLawers @N_T_S

Forest Research has made an important contribution to a new *Dendrochronology Research Framework for Scotland. 🌲👈
FR Scientist, Dr Tom Ovenden MICFor, a subject matter expert and co-author, discusses this new Framework and explores how different aspects of dendrochronology can be combined with technological innovation to answer key research questions relating to biodiversity, conservation and forest management under a changing climate. 🌍
More info: scarf.scot/thematic/dendroch…
*Dendrochronology is the use of tree-ring data for scientific research.

Aspens are popping up across Mar Lodge, often far from the nearest mature trees. Of our 89 individual stands, 35 are comprised solely of wee trees! This is showing us that this precious species is expanding its range across the estate.
We're recruiting for an exciting new #PhD project in #mountain #woodland restoration! "The genetic diversity & adaptive potential of mountain birch in Scotland for high-altitude nature recovery" hosted by
@UK_CEH, @StirUni & @Forest_Research

I'm super excited that a #lichen of international significance has been discovered at #Corrour! Yellow Specklebelly (Pseudocyphellaria citrina) is a temperate #rainforest specialist & this find on an old Goat #Willow is unusually far east for #Lochaber. Record &📷 by Ian Strachan

Had to wait a bit to post this until both were confirmed, but my other 2 finds from this particular job that I was gey chuffed with were Sphagnum majus & S. affine, neither of which I’d seen before so it was great to pick them out! #Corrour
Great to be out doing #fieldwork today at #Corrour, #monitoring our #montane Scots #Pine planting & mycorrhizal inoculation trial WITHOUT the use of fencing. Rather chuffed with how well these trees have fared in the year since planting up here above #LochOssian at 500m altitude!

Restoring nature takes time, and money. But the results can be amazing.
In the Cairngorms, @MarLodgeNTS is regenerating Caledonian pine forest, restoring vital peatlands and recreating rare alpine habitats.
