Are you haunted by autofluorescence? 👻 Unfortunately, we couldn't call Ghostbusters, so we developed the WP XD algorithm to tackle fluorescence backgrounds and noise. In many Raman applications, the sample's autofluorescence can overwhelm the generally weak Raman signal. While traditional approaches like baseline subtraction can remove the fluorescence background, the Raman signal often remains hidden beneath the associated counting noise. Wasatch Photonics' WP XD algorithm uses a U-Net AI network trained to remove both fluorescence backgrounds and noise, helping extract clean Raman signals from challenging autofluorescent samples. No ghostbusting required! 🎃

Every great Spectral Domain OCT image starts with the spectrometer. Our Cobra OCT spectrometers are built around our own patented VPH gratings, designed and made in-house. The result is more signal, low roll-off, and sharp images deeper into your sample, at line rates up to 250 kHz. Whether you need high speed for research, extra depth at 800 nm, visible-light imaging, or a compact module to build into your own product, there's a Cobra configured for it, with 550 to 1600 nm options in more than 30 configurations. Every model comes with OCT-specific software kits and application engineers who help you get to your first image faster. Tell us what you want to see, and we'll help you find the right fit. Introducing WP XD: Revolutionizing Raman Spectroscopy At the upcoming SciX conference in Sparks, NV, we will be showcasing Wasatch Photonics’ new post-processing neural net algorithm, the WP XD. It is designed to address one of the most significant challenges in Raman spectroscopy– the overwhelming autofluorescence that can obscure Raman signals for many sample types. WP XD effectively removes both the fluorescence background and the associated shot noise, revealing clean Raman signals even from challenging samples. The algorithm is sample-agnostic and quantitative, recognizing Raman peaks in general and preserving both peak position and peak height. This enables you to identify compounds previously lost in fluorescence. It’s fully compatible with any Wasatch Raman system and is fully integrated into the ENLIGHTEN™ and ENLIGHTEN™ Mobile software. Visit us at Booth 213 at SciX to see how WP XD works! #SciX2026 #SciX

Built around our proprietary VPH grating, technology, the industry-leading Cobra 1300 series spectrometer minimizes the trade-off between imaging depth and clarity, maximizing data quality for deeper features and wider scattering angles. Its deep-tissue penetration supports fundamental research, pharmaceutical testing, ophthalmology, angiography, and intravascular imaging. The image below shows a cross-section of the human cornea, including the iris and upper surface of the crystalline lens, captured with a Cobra 1300 spectrometer.

Look at how beautiful our OCT grating is when light shines on it!✨As the grating disperses the light into different wavelengths, it creates this beautiful rainbow. 🌈 The clearest and deepest SD-OCT images depend on broad bandwidth and a high signal-to-noise ratio, which is why our trusted and patented HD gratings are designed for exceptional efficiency across all polarizations, even across wide 100-200 nm wavelength ranges. Select from our stock options or leverage our OCT expertise to design your ideal grating!

🧊 Ice gets pretty strange under pressure. Researchers have recreated the extreme conditions thought to exist deep within Uranus and Neptune, observing a new form of superionic ice previously predicted by theory. The discovery could help scientists better understand the unusual magnetic fields of these distant planets. Read more: physics.aps.org/articles/v19…

Join us in welcoming Isaac Tangen to the Wasatch Photonics engineering team in Logan, Utah! Isaac will be helping optimize various processes, making them more efficient and repeatable. He’ll also be contributing to the research and development side of things. He studied Chemistry at BYU for his undergrad and Emory University for graduate school. While in school, he was a spectroscopist, performing time-resolved sum-frequency generation, mainly of CO-metal systems in an electrochemical setting. As part of that, he became deeply familiar with high-powered ultrafast lasers, optical parametric amplifiers, spectrometers, and various optical equipment. Outside of work, Isaac enjoys hiking, mountain biking, camping with his family, and is an avid visual astronomer. We’re excited to have him join the Wasatch family!

🐑🌿 Meet the “leaf sheep” — a tiny sea slug with a pretty incredible trick. After eating algae, it holds onto the algae’s chloroplasts and uses them to capture energy from sunlight through a process called kleptoplasty. At just a few millimeters long, this little solar-powered sea creature is a great reminder of how wonderfully strange nature can be. Ten years can change a lot. When David Creasey joined Wasatch Photonics, we were a much smaller company. In the decade since, Wasatch has grown across our facilities, our team, our capabilities, and the customers and applications we serve around the world. As CEO, David has helped guide that transformation with a rare combination of technical curiosity, creativity, determination, and genuine involvement in the day-to-day work of the company. Whether he's weighing in on product strategy, working alongside a department on a new project, meeting with customers, or traveling between our sites, David is rarely far from the details. But perhaps the biggest part of his impact is the way he leads people. David gets to know his team, asks questions, challenges us, encourages us, and genuinely cares about both the people at Wasatch and where the company is going. As Wasatch begins its next chapter as part of FOSS, we're grateful for the leadership that helped bring us here — and excited to see where we go next. Congratulations on 10 years, David. Thank you for everything you've put into Wasatch along the way. We'd make a joke here, but we're fairly certain you'd have a worse pun ready. 😉

Did you catch the Perseid meteor shower this week? ☄️ The Perseid meteor shower is a yearly event visible in the Northern Hemisphere as Earth passes through the debris trail left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. It peaked around August 12–13 this year, streaking the night sky with beautiful trails of light. While the peak has passed, the shower is active through August 24. Let us know in the comments if you’ve seen any “shooting stars” this week!
