Senate Majority Leader @JohnThune on his optimism heading into the final stretch of the midterm campaign: “We’re seeing our voters start to come home, and I think that really helps us in the margin-of-error races. And most polling underestimates Republican turnout historically, it’s just a fact. If we’re in a margin-of-error situation right now, we feel pretty good about our chances, but we’ve got to deliver and finish the next 35 days strong.”

Senate Majority Leader @JohnThune praises Republican Senate candidates like @MikeRogersForMI and @SenSusanCollins for being their own candidates and focusing on their constituents rather than nationalizing their races: “Mike Rogers, running in a state that doesn’t historically vote Republican, is demonstrating that he is his own person. And I think that he is getting out there and talking to the people of his state in a way that hopefully gets them in his corner before this is all said and done. The advantage he has is the guy running against him is a far-left, extreme radical Democrat. And so drawing that contrast is helpful. But I think for each of these candidates, whether it’s Maine or Michigan, you have an electorate that isn’t homogeneous. You have to appeal to people in your state. You have to be your own candidate. If you make it about the people, the voters of Michigan, the voters of Maine, and not nationalize it or make it about what is going on in the national environment, I think you’ve got a really good chance of winning.”

Senate Majority Leader @JohnThune on Democrats’ refusal to vote for the SAVE America Act and how Republicans can make it an issue: “Every Democrat block voted against it. We had it on the floor six different times in different variations, and every single Democrat, every single time on six occasions, has voted against it. So I think it is an issue our candidates can use on the campaign trail and define their opponents as being against something that is an 80% issue with the American people.”

But if all these margin-of-error races flip our way, we would have a really good night. So right now they are margin-of-error, and that means that you have to keep your foot on the gas going down the stretch in these last 35 or 40 days. You’ve got to get your message out, you’ve got to define your opponent, and then you have to get voters out to vote on Election Day.”

I think the biggest impact will be this massive deluge of Republican spending that’s reshaping a lot of this map and making Republicans feel a lot more confident despite a lot of negative polls.”

This bill passed in the House of Representatives 417 to 3. How often do you have, for example, the House Freedom Caucus and the Squad, AOC, and Hakeem Jeffries voting for the same thing? It’s because they see this as a no-brainer bill to help deliver on both the utility bills question, but also people’s concerns about data centers. And Chuck Schumer had his Democrats block it because, one, they want the data center issue and the electricity bills issue to stay painful for voters going into November, but also because they don’t want Jon Husted to get a win because they’re desperate to help Sherrod Brown in his challenge in the state of Ohio.”

.@MattWhitlock breaks down the Alaska Senate race, calls out Mary Peltola’s character flaws and do-nothing tenure as a congresswoman: “This actually isn’t that unfamiliar. In 2020, I was at the NRSC when Sullivan was last up, and he once again had a challenger, and there were a lot of polls around this exact same time that put the race within the margin of error, and Sullivan ended up winning very handily. But it is a state that you have to watch, with their ranked-choice voting, with a lot of different populations in the state. But I think that Peltola’s challenge right now is, for example, with this New York Times story — some are dismissing it, saying: ’You know, salty language isn’t going to hurt her too much,’ but she did say, one, she hopes one of her constituents dies of a botched abortion and, two, she also said a number of terrible things, including shoving a staff member. You can be a sort of member with low character if you’re incredibly effective… but you can’t be a person with poor character who’s also ineffective. And when she was in Congress, she didn’t pass a single bill, and so I think that’s going to be a challenge for her.”

.@MattWhitlock on @MikeRogersForMI’s strategy in taking on Abdul El-Sayed: “I do think anything that Mike Rogers can do to shift the conversation to Abdul’s actual ideas on the economy helps him, because Abdul wants to double taxes to make health care work worse for people, and his plans are exactly what made Kamala Harris lose in 2024. His Medicare for All plan is exactly what made Kamala Harris lose.”

.@MattWhitlock rips into Democrat MI Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s refusal to condemn terrorists, including the IRGC and the Ayatollah in Iran: “It was really interesting through all that kind of word salad answer, Abdul could never condemn terrorists, whether it was the IRGC, whether it was the Ayatollah. He kept pivoting back to criticism of America… The takeaway from the entire segment is Abdul can’t condemn terrorists.”

I think he spent an entire career fighting and killing terrorists, and he was very supportive of getting in there because Iran has been the world‘s worst state sponsor of terror historically. And I think he was supportive of that, but also circumstances over time have shifted. And he believes, like President Trump, that we need to wrap this up as quickly as possible. Again, I don‘t think that‘s necessarily inconsistent, but I also think if people are worried about prices, you look at Abdul El-Sayed, who wants to ban gas powered cars, and I think that‘s going to raise costs quite a bit. He wants to ban your private health insurance and double your taxes to pay for it. So I do think that there‘s a lot going on there. And I think Rogers is not necessarily being inconsistent. He‘s reacting to the circumstances on the ground.”
