Traveler. I follow roads where thought forgets its map. In foreign corners, silence speaks, knowledge wakes, and something within me arrives before I do.

Mid-Journey โ€” Years ago, in graduate school, I studied travel and mobility. But the research was never only theoretical. I was also traveling โ€” watching how movement, borders, and small encounters shape ordinary lives. Those thoughts slowly became small fragments on Twitter. Each one began with the same words: ๆ—…ใฎ้€”ไธŠ โ€” Mid-Journey. There were 365 of them. In 2023 they became a small book. Now I am walking that road again, turning those fragments into poems โ€” one each day until December 31. 365 fragments of a road.

#vss365 #sneakers ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” I came home after dark, sat beside the door, and loosened my travel-worn sneakers. From a narrow groove in one sole, a tiny white pebble slipped freeโ€”โ€” one clear note in the sleeping house. It was small enough to hide beneath my thumbnail, smooth on one side, rough on the other. I turned it slowly in my palm, trying to remember which road had lent it to me. No road came back. I placed it on the windowsill. Beyond the glass, the familiar street shone faintly after rain. Inside, a small piece of somewhere else rested quietly in the dark. At dawn, a narrow beam of sunlight crossed the sill and touched the stone. The room was no larger than before, yet somewhere within it, a distant road began againโ€”โ€” as though my journey had arrived a little later than I had.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” beneath a yellow lamp, I unfolded a map worn thin at its creases. I marked the towns where I had rested, then joined them with straight lines along the edge of a ruler. Months of wandering became a handful of quiet strokes of graphite. Not one remembered where the road had turned. Yet between those lines and the winding roads my feet remembered, another geography lay hidden. There was the hillside I climbed twice because a stranger had mistaken east for west, the doorway where I sheltered from sudden rain, the market where an old woman pressed an orange into my palm without asking where I came from. None of these had earned a dot upon the map. Yet those unmarked detours had carried me farther than the straight lines could ever tell. I laid the ruler aside. In the silence between the lines, I began to give the forgotten roads their voicesโ€”โ€” rain whispering against a roof, the warmth of an orange in my hand, a stranger calling out from a distant turning. And as the words unfolded, the roads began to open beneath my feet. The rain fell once more. The orange warmed my empty hand. Beyond the market, a narrow path appeared that I could not remember ever taking. I looked down. The map was still upon the desk, its straight lines undisturbed. The towns remained exactly where they had been. Yet somewhere between those lines, I was walking againโ€”โ€” first through places I remembered, then beyond the last turning of memory, toward a place my footsteps had never reached. I had unfolded the map to tell the story of a journey. But somewhere between its lines, the story had become a road, and I was no longer merely telling the journeyโ€”โ€” I was journeying through the story.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at seven seventeen, the mountain mist had swallowed the fork in the road. I unfolded my map once more, but its careful blue lines knew nothing of the whiteness before me. A woman came down the slope, firewood bound across her shoulders, the scent of smoke lingering in her shawl. When I asked which way led to the valley, she pointed uphill, toward the longer path. "Beyond the bend, there's a spring," she said. "Someone has left a cup beside it." Farther on, where the trail narrowed between loose stones and empty air, a man leading three llamas turned back from his own journey to guide me across a shallow stream. The animals waited, their breath rising like small clouds into the mountain cold. He asked for nothing, not even my name. At the spring, I found a dented tin cup resting on a stone beside the water. Its handle faced the path, as though an unseen hand had quietly welcomed whoever came next. I have met such nameless saints on countless roads through distant lands. Their wisdom was not born of never having lost their way, but of remembering how it felt to stand alone where every path seemed strange. They offered neither miracles nor salvation, only a gesture, a word, a few shared steps. Yet their detours led me through places no map had ever taught me to seek: a doorway opening in the rain, a conversation beyond the reach of language, a silence in which two strangers ceased, for a moment, to be strangers. And somewhere along those winding roads, without a shrine, without an altar, the ordinary earth beneath my feet became a sanctuary. For the sacred had never waited at the end of any journey. It arose whenever a path turned toward another human being, whenever someone chose to walk farther so that another might not walk alone. Even now, when strangers ask me the way, I cannot always tell them where to go. The mountains remain vast, and the roads still disappear into mist. But I remember the spring, and the cup someone had left there, its handle turned toward the road.

#vss365 #Lottery ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at a tavern beyond the mountain pass, a lottery chose the songs we would sing. I drew a slip in a language I could not pronounce. From the darkest corner, an old woman rose. She held the paper to the lamplight and began to sing. Rain touched the shutters. Her voice crossed the room like a road returning to a country no map could hold. When the last note faded, she wiped a tear, then placed the paper back in my hand. I never learned what the words meant. I carried the slip out into the rain, careful not to fold the country she had just returned to.

"Come closer," she whispered. Her fingers caught my collar, drawing me into the warmth of her body. Her lips brushed mine, once, then again, each kiss lingering a little longer than the last. Her silk dress whispered beneath my wandering hands. She swept her hair aside, exposing the tender curve of her neck, then glanced back at me with a smile that needed no words. I pressed my lips there, just below her ear. Jasmine, perhaps. Or some flower that bloomed only after midnight. I closed my eyes and breathed her in, slowly, almost greedily, wishing I could carry that fragrance to the end of the world. Thenโ€”โ€” A sharp metallic screech tore through the darkness. The train was braking. I opened my eyes. My cheek was resting on the shoulder of an elderly woman in a blue cardigan. She looked down at me over her spectacles. "Comfortable, dear?" I sat up, mortified. Then I caught it againโ€”โ€” the faint scent of jasmine rising from her scarf.

#vss365 #Unexpected ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” in the world's highest capital, a cable car climbed into the thin evening air. Below, red-brick houses clung to the folds of a steep valley. Corrugated roofs flashed with sunset; laundry trembled on rooftop lines, and buses crept along roads stitched into the mountainside. Far below, the square I had called the city's heart shrank to a speck. From this height, I thought, I could finally see the whole of it. Then a child beside me pressed a small finger to the glass. "That's home." I followed the finger, but among a thousand roofs could not tell which one. Nothing below had moved. Yet an unexpected map unfolded: not one center, but a thousandโ€”โ€” each one a home, each home a world I had mistaken for a roof.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at 3:17 in the morning, somewhere above an unnamed sea, the cabin lights had faded to the color of a memory not yet ready to disappear. My passport lay closed in my pocket. One country had already let me go; another had not yet asked me to enter. Between the two, I was neither expected nor remembered. On the screen above the aisle, a small white aircraft crossed a world of perfect coordinates. Every mile had its number. Every border had its place. Only I had none. I had a seat number, a flight number, a name printed on a boarding passโ€”โ€” yet none of them could tell me where I belonged. Far below, invisible lines divided the darkness into nations, languages, histories. Above them, the engines hummed, indifferent to every border the earth had learned to draw. I remembered the cities where I had slept, the streets that had briefly known my footsteps, the rooms where I had unpacked my belongings and mistaken staying for the meaning of travel. Each arrival gave me an address. Each departure took it away. But here, between a country left behind and a country not yet entered, I felt no absence. For the first time, having nowhere to belong was not a loss but a kind of wholeness. Beyond the window, the horizon slowly loosened the darkness from the sea. No border appeared. No destination announced itself. Only the first pale light of a world that belonged to no one. And then I understood. The cities had been pauses. The borders, interruptions. Even arrival was only a brief surrender to the geography of belonging. I had always believed I was somewhere along the journey. But the journey was not something I was on. Being on the way was the journey itself. And there, between the last country and the next, I discovered that the only place where I had ever been entirely a traveler was nowhere.

#vss365 #dead ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” At eight o'clock, darkness settled over the old factory town. The chimneys no longer smoked. Weeds grew through the pavement, and shop windows displayed the faded promises of another century. The newspapers called it a dead town. Only a small diner at the corner kept its yellow light burning. Inside, four people shared their supper, arguing about tomorrow's weather as though tomorrow were certain. I pushed open the door. The woman behind the counter looked up from drying a glass and said, "Come in. There's still soup." She did not ask where I came from. She simply pulled out a chair and placed another bowl upon the table. Someone laughed at a joke I had arrived too late to hear. A spoon touched the rim of a cup. The rain began tapping at the window, and no one hurried to leave. Outside, the town lay silent, abandoned by progress and pronounced dead by strangers. T he factory chimneys had long since ceased to breathe. But inside, between two people who had never met, steam was still rising from a bowl of soup.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at the heart of a city without a name, faces streamed past like rain on glass. No one asked where I had come from. I could disappear into the crowd without so much as changing its course. Around the city, crooked circles widened, each pretending to share a single center. Beyond the first, a shopkeeper recognized me. Beyond the next, a stranger made room at his table. Farther out, where asphalt gave way to dust, an old woman called from her doorwayโ€”โ€” not because she knew my name, but because she remembered my passing. With every boundary, another face came into focus. I began to hear the places hidden in people's voices, to learn the names behind their greetings, and to discover that even silence belonged to someone. Some doors opened. Others stayed shut. But behind each was a life no circle could contain. I began to believe in a simple law: the farther I traveled from the center, the more clearly a human being appeared. Then the last circle brought me to a border. Its line ran across the earth like a scar that refused to follow the hills. A guard held my passport up to the light, then looked directly into my face. Yet all he seemed to see was the country printed on the page. In the city, no one had asked where I came from. Here, it was the only thing he wanted to know. The names I had learned, the voices that had called me back, the kindnesses that bore no stamp or sealโ€”โ€” none of them answered his question. I became a nationality, a photograph, a foreigner waiting for a gate to open. And across that line, people I had never met were already being called them. In the city, faces had vanished because there were too many to remember. At the border, they vanished because one word was made to stand for all the rest. How strange that the center and the farthest edge should wear the same faceless mask. At the outermost circle, the crooked rings seemed to mock the equation I had trusted. I had crossed them all, only to find myself at the center of another anonymity. Perhaps the distances were never wrong. Perhaps it was I who had mistaken distance for recognition. The map had room for every border, but not for a single human face.

But his granddaughter, not yet seven, reached across the table, passed him the salt, and answered in the very same tongue. He laughed. She laughed back. Between them, the words passed as easily as the salt, needing no translation. Somewhere, in a scholarly book, that language lay buried beneath a date and a definition. Yet here it was, alive in the mouth of a child, carried from one generation to another without ceremony, without permission, without even knowing it had died. #vss365 #dead ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” The station clock had been dead at 4:23 for years. Dust gathered along its hands, and a small spider had made a home between the four and the five. Yet trains continued to arrive. A woman adjusted her scarf. A porter dragged a cart across the platform. An orange slipped from a paper bag and rolled quietly toward my feet. No one looked up at the clock. A whistle scattered the pigeons. The timetable rattled in a draft from the open doors. Somewhere, a child called for his mother, and a train answered with a sigh. I picked up the orange and returned it to its owner. She smiled, thanked me, and disappeared into the arriving crowd. For an instant, the space between two strangers had been filled with something neither the clock nor the timetable could ever measure. At 4:23, she smiled. For once, being lost felt exactly like arriving.

#vss365 #bravery ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” in a harbor of brightly painted houses, a bridge swung aside to let a ship pass. Even the crossing, I thought, knew how to change its shape without ceasing to be a crossing. Along the waterfront, a child called to her grandmother in a creole tongue. The words carried echoes of shores I could almost recognize, yet belonged entirely to this one. I found myself trying to separate themโ€”โ€” this sound from one language, that rhythm from anotherโ€”โ€” as though every syllable owed allegiance to a single origin. Some crossings had been chosen. Others had been endured. The language carried both histories without erasing either. The child called again. Her grandmother answered. Their laughter passed between them without asking permission from a map. Perhaps bravery was never the courage to remain pure. Perhaps it was the courage to speak in a voice shaped by many shores, and to call this shore home without having to prove where the voice began.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” along the road, the evening wind moved freely through open doorways, carrying smoke, dust, and voices without asking whom they belonged to. We asked. We said us, and a center appeared. We said them, and drew a border around it. Then we called the line a definition, as though a word could be innocent merely because it was precise. We measured their names with our tongues, their histories with our clocks, their lives against the narrow marks on a ruler we had made ourselves. What would not fit, we called inferior. What we could not hear, we called silence. We opened a gate and named it welcome, provided they came through without their language, their memories, or the stubborn dignity of remaining themselves. When they fell quiet, we called it peace. And I, who had crossed so many borders, believing that I had left them behind, felt that same ruler in my hand. Even my wish to understand them had quietly asked them to fit inside what I already knew. At dusk, the wall cast its shadow on the side we called home. Their voices still passed through. We did notโ€”โ€” mistaking the limits of our knowledge for the limits of the world.

#vss365 #bravery ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” in a workshop beside the canals, the furnace breathed its orange weather into the winter morning. At the end of an iron pipe, a glassblower turned a gathering of light. Each breath widened the vessel; each slow rotation kept gravity at bay. I watched its delicate rim take shape, almost perfect in the trembling glow. Surely, I thought, this was the moment to let it be. Instead, the craftsman opened the furnace and returned his fragile creation to the fire. For an instant, it became less a vessel than a possibility. How easily I had mistaken a moment of beauty for the end of becoming. Outside, the canals held the grey sky in their patient reflections. Inside, the glass was still becoming something neither of us had yet seen.
