Turning strong engineers into strong managers is one of the trickiest moves in tech. Jakov Friedman spends a lot of his time doing exactly that. Jakov is our Head of Product Engineering. He runs five teams and around 30 engineers. He joined Wallester in 2025 as a team lead and stepped up to the new role in early 2026. He has spent more than twenty years in IT and close to a decade leading agile transformations across telecom, security software, and fintech. We talked to him about what the job actually involves. How you lead when you can no longer be close to every detail. Why predictable delivery matters more than fast delivery. What's different about building for a company whose cards people rely on to run their businesses. And here's his advice for a first leadership role, which is simpler than most: spend time listening, and don't pretend to have every answer. Julian Brand treats compliance like the foundations of a house. The CEO of Wallester UK was the latest guest on BOLD Talks, sitting down with Epi Ludvik of BOLD Awards to talk about how a career in law shapes the way he runs a fintech. In his words, without a secure foundation, "the house is just frankly going to fall down." He also explains the "shiny new" trap founders fall into when they want to issue their own cards, and why Wallester grows one step at a time instead of chasing scale. His answer to what "bold" means came from an unexpected place: a rugby pitch. On 4–5 November, we’re glad to be opening our Tallinn office for a two-day training on financial crime. The programme is run by the AML Certification Centre, and we want to introduce them. They train the compliance professionals who protect banks, payment firms and crypto platforms from financial crime. Founded in Tallinn in 2023, they’ve already certified more than 5,000 people across 79 countries. Their courses are written and marked by compliance experts who do the work themselves, and built around real cases rather than theory. Over two days at Golden Gate, a strong lineup of speakers from across banking and payments will cover how money laundering and fraud show up day-to-day, and how teams can prepare for the EU’s new anti-money-laundering rules in 2027. For anyone working in compliance, fraud or risk, it should be two days well spent. More about the AML Certification Centre, and how to register, below 👇 events.amlcertification.com/… #AML #fintech #compliance #financialcrime #wallester

3,500+ HR and reward professionals, two days, one Wallester badge. Karine Martinez is heading to Employee Benefits Live. On 13–14 October, Karine Martinez will be at ExCeL London for Europe’s largest reward and benefits event. One of its four stages this year is called “Better Benefits, Smarter Spend”, and that’s the conversation she’s going for. Wallester builds payment cards and spend controls, so how companies fund, manage and track employee benefits sits close to our work. Two days with the people who design those programmes is the quickest way to hear what they need next. Attending too? Send Karine a message and meet her at ExCeL.

When Transferra set out to launch a corporate card programme, they faced a dilemma: build their own infrastructure or go with a white-label solution. That decision was at the centre of the webinar we hosted yesterday, How EMIs Scale Corporate Card Programmes With White-Label Infrastructure. Alexey Reshko, COO of the FCA-authorised EMI Transferra, walked us through the build-versus-buy decision, four years after choosing the white-label route, with no regrets. Alongside him, our own Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships, discussed what EMIs are really buying when they opt for a card programme, while Georgi Prelovski, Senior Client Implementation Manager, shared what the first weeks of implementation look like in practice. Angelina Prokopenko did a great job hosting the session. The full recording and a written recap are now available on our blog. It’s well worth a look if you’re exploring how to scale your corporate card programme and expand your offering. Some conversations are much faster to solve across a table than across an inbox. We recently hosted Vita Oļehnoviča from Visa at the Wallester office for another of our regular operations check-ins. We reviewed our card programmes’ performance, aligned on key priorities, and mapped out next steps for continuous improvement and upcoming operational goals. Sitting in the same room always makes these sessions even more productive. Looking forward to the next one! Thank you for joining us, Vita Oļehnoviča.

Only one day to go. Have you registered for our webinar yet? When clients operate across multiple entities, currencies and markets, every new requirement can create another operational, technical or compliance challenge. On 8 October, Wallester and Transferra will bring together three perspectives on how EMIs and fintechs can build and scale corporate card programmes with white-label infrastructure. Business: Alexey Reshko, COO at Transferra, will share what Transferra has learned from supporting more than 1,000 registered clients and cross-border payments in over 40 currencies. Strategy: Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Wallester, will explain BIN sponsorship, the commercial case for white-label issuing and the decisions that can affect time to market. Implementation: Georgi Prelovski, Senior Implementation Manager at Wallester, will cover API integration, corporate controls and multi-currency workflows. Moderated by Angelina Prokopenko. You’ll get practical insight into the decisions to make before implementation begins, plus a checklist you can use to assess your own card programme requirements. 8 October 2026 | 18:00 EEST / 17:00 CEST / 16:00 BST 40 minutes, including live Q&A The webinar is this Thursday. Why are EMIs building corporate card programmes now? Corporate cards work on different economics from consumer cards: higher spend per card and interchange that reflects the servicing a business client needs. That's why complex corporate clients are worth winning. Serving them is the harder part: multi-entity structures, several currencies, controls per entity and per employee. Join our webinar on 8 October for three perspectives on how it's done: Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Wallester, takes the business case — when white-label issuing makes commercial sense, what BIN sponsorship involves, and what shapes time to market. Alexey Reshko, COO at Transferra, shares how they scaled their own programme on that model while serving complex global businesses. Georgi Prelovski, Senior Implementation Manager at Wallester, goes into the implementation – API integration, custom corporate controls and multi-currency workflows. Bring your own questions for the live Q&A, and get our card programme readiness checklist after the session. 3 questions to ask your card-issuing partner. Choosing a card-issuing partner for a business card programme is harder than the pitch decks suggest. In this short video: three questions to ask any provider before you sign. On 8 October, our White-Label partner Transferra will share how they scaled their card programme, and why the answers to these three questions turned out to matter. Alexey Reshko, COO at Transferra, is joined by Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Wallester, and Georgi Prelovski, Senior Implementation Manager at Wallester. The real test starts when a card programme needs to scale. New markets, corporate structures and customer requirements have to work within the same operating model. During our upcoming webinar, Alexey Reshko, Chief Operating Officer at Transferra, will share the real-world perspective of an FCA-authorised electronic money institution serving global businesses. Alexey will discuss what Transferra has learned from scaling its B2B card proposition and adapting it to different corporate needs. Attendees will gain a clearer view of the operational decisions involved, the challenges that emerge as a programme grows and how infrastructure choices translate into day-to-day delivery. 8 October 2026 18:00 EEST | 17:00 CEST | 16:00 BST 40 minutes, including a live Q&A Register here: zoom.us/webinar/register/151… Alexey will be joined by: Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Wallester, covering the business and partnership perspective. 🍽️ Pilaf Day at Wallester Autumn has arrived, which is as good a reason as any for a plate of Uzbek pilaf. The team spent today around a long table with rice slow-cooked with lamb, carrots and cumin, and samsa straight from the oven. We did this back in February, and people kept asking when we’d do it again, so we brought it back. There wasn’t much left by the end. And we’re already taking suggestions for what to cook next time! #wallester #lifeatwallester #teamculture

Meet Andrei Zubovits, our Head of Implementation, and the person who turns White-Label partnerships into live, running card programmes. Andrei joined Wallester almost five years ago, when the whole company still fit on one floor with thirty or forty people. He's since moved through partnerships, project management, business development, and solutions consulting, and today he leads the team that takes a client from a signed letter of intent to cards people can actually tap. In our latest employee interview, he explains what implementation really involves, why a non-regulated card programme is easier to launch than a crypto one, how embedded finance has changed over five years, and his advice for anyone trying to break into fintech: just get in. A card programme is only as scalable as its implementation. As requirements expand across entities, currencies and user roles, the APIs, controls and workflows behind the programme need to keep pace. During our upcoming webinar with Transferra, Georgi Prelovski, Senior Implementation Manager at Wallester, will cover the technical implementation of corporate card programmes. He’ll explain how business requirements are translated into API integrations, custom corporate controls and multi-currency workflows. Attendees will gain a practical view of the decisions that need to be made before implementation and how the different parts of a programme fit together. 8 October 2026 18:00 EEST | 17:00 CEST | 16:00 BST 40 minutes, including a live Q&A Register here: zoom.us/webinar/register/151… Georgi will be joined by: Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Wallester, covering the business and partnership perspective. Last Thursday, our Tallinn office filled up for our first DevClub meetup as an official sponsor. Two engineering talks, plenty of good questions, and the obligatory pizza. Franklin Ezeji, Senior Software Engineer at Eesti Energia, walked through SchedNext, a lightweight agent runtime for cloud, edge, and embedded systems. Zeynep Öztuğ, Engineering Lead at Bally's Interactive, followed with a talk on the practical engineering decisions that shape modern systems, the thinking that happens beyond the code. As a new sponsor of MTÜ Devclub, this was the first of more events we'll host at our office, and our own engineers will be presenting at future meetups too. Thanks to everyone who came along, to our two speakers, and to the DevClub team for a great evening. See you at the next one. #Wallester #DevClub #Engineering #Tallinn

Scaling a card programme is a business decision before it is a technical one. Growth raises questions about which corporate niche to serve, how BIN sponsorship should work and how much issuing infrastructure to build internally. During our upcoming webinar with Transferra, Karine Martinez, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Wallester, will examine these decisions from the business perspective. Her session will help fintechs, EMIs and payment institutions understand how the partnership model affects time to market, programme responsibilities and the ability to expand into more specialised B2B use cases. 8 October 2026 18:00 EEST | 17:00 CEST | 16:00 BST 40 minutes, including a live Q&A Register here: zoom.us/webinar/register/151… Karine will be joined by: Georgi Prelovski, Senior Implementation Manager at Wallester, covering API integration, controls and multi-currency workflows. Naerata Ometi, the Estonian NGO we've supported for years, helps families across Estonia through serious hardship. And it has just launched something we think is really worth sharing. It's called One Ray. Instead of gifts for a birthday, wedding, or company anniversary, you create your own "sun," and friends or partners light a ray on it. Every ray is a donation to a real Naerata Ometi project, with the giver's name and greeting kept on the page. It takes about two minutes to set up, works for personal celebrations and company events alike, and every euro goes to the cause you choose, whether that's a new stove before winter or a child's month of after-school clubs. We're proud to support Naerata Ometi, and glad to help share this one. Read more on our blog 👇 wallester.com/blog/partnersh… #Wallester #NaerataOmeti #Community

Card programmes become more complex to launch and scale when corporate customers operate across multiple entities, currencies and markets. On 8 October, Wallester and Transferra will examine how fintechs and EMIs can use white-label infrastructure to support these requirements without building the entire issuing stack from scratch.
