The only class of drug that ever cured anything is the one the industry walked away from.
Antibiotics cured. A course, a fortnight, a well patient who never came back. Pneumonia, sepsis, a scratch gone bad: the things that killed your great-grandparents at 40 became a week off work.
The last new class of antibiotic to reach a patient was discovered in 1987. Nothing since.
In 2016 AstraZeneca sold its antibiotics business. In 2018 Novartis shut its own down, and Sanofi followed. The biggest companies on earth left the one field in medicine with a 100% cure rate.
In 2018 a small company got a new antibiotic approved against a superbug the old ones could not touch. It went bankrupt within the year, because a drug that fixes a patient in ten days and is then put back on the shelf cannot pay for its own trial.
Resistance now kills more than a million people a year, more than malaria, more than HIV, and the pipeline is empty, because the spreadsheet says fill it with something taken for life.
So the same companies put the money into cholesterol, blood pressure, reflux, mood and weight. Conditions nobody is cured of. Drugs nobody stops.
A cure destroys its own market. A manager grows it. They read the two numbers and chose.
Every operation you will ever have depends on an antibiotic working. The industry decided that was not worth the money, and spent it on a tablet you take forever for a number.
The drug that works was shelved. The drug that manages was funded. The leaflet calls that healthcare.
The one cure still on the market is on your plate, and it is the thing on the plate with the warning.
Lucid and insightful look at the cultural forces that helped shape ‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.’

yeah so basically blizzard announced wow: forever which is classic+ which we've been asking them to do for years. they're resetting the level cap and world to be the same as it was when the game originally released in 2004 but with better graphics, new quests, optimizing classes to make all the specs viable, maybe most importantly they denigrated realms and now the servers are shared but layered and you can play with your friends and have much fuller, more vibrant worlds. they even let undead be pallys and added some weird elf race called skyborne which is just a reskin of blood elves but whatever that's fine.
the beta has been going insanely hard, i spent $60 to get access but that was a small price to pay, you can only go to level 20 but it feels incredible, the world is amazing, it really is 'the main character' as the Blizzard devs said it would be and we've sent the old team that built retail into an abomination and told us we didn't really know what we want packing, it does take a long time to run back after you die though.
Asmongold has a guild called Olympus which is 50,000 members strong, it's a literal army of chuds that's taking it to the horde every day, you should see the videos of the PvP, the vibes are unmatched. you're probably wondering 'who's Asmongold', the answer is he's the king of the chuds, he's our chud, he grew up on the internet as a wow streamer, he lives in his childhood home and there's mold and he doesn't do the dishes, it's sick, we grew up with him, i cried when his dad passed away and i would storm the gates of hell with this guy.
he retired from wow because retail got so horrendously complicated and bad, but now every day him and thousands of disaffected young men are just having silly goose adventures, taking over the timeline, doing tabard checks and collecting taxes, it's the most incredible organic mmo content we've had in decades. the foids are absolutely melting down online, it's like gamergate 2.0 but this time the neets are in control.
so anyway i'm rolling human pally and if you want to take that trip to see your family we should do it before november 4th.

What he found destroyed the noble savage myth.
Then his own discipline spent the next four decades trying to destroy him for publishing it. 🧵

Reading William Nelson's 1956 book on vulgaria, "A fifteenth Century Schoolbook", collections of sentences and texts that schoolboys from the age of eleven would have been required to translate and speak in latin. Vulgaria is always a fantastic source of information on what children really did, thought, and spoke about, since the whole idea was that they should be able to speak fluently about everyday matters that concerned them in a foreign language (in this case latin).
One of my favorite passages is a boy who gets sent a box of 200 wardens (a hugely popular breed of pear that came from the orchard of Warden Abbey in the 13th century) from his father, but because he is absent when his brother opens the box he misses out on the best pears and ends up with all the dingy moldy ones.
This exact drama happens in my family too, at least a couple of times a year. Hence we have a rule that the entire family must be present before gift boxes of fruit are opened.

“Did you ever hear the story of Korean adoptees in Sweden?”
“No.”
“I thought not. It’s not a story Blank Slatists will tell you. It’s a Hereditarian legend. In Sweden, foreign adoptees always have lower IQ and educational attainment than Swedes… except Korean adoptees...”
In Sweden, 48% of Korean adoptees achieved a post-secondary degree. This is compared to 35% of the general population, 26% of native born Swedes who were adopted, and 24% of non-Korean adoptees.
All adoptees do poorly except Koreans.

The 20th century world wars taught two lessons at once: do not sleepwalk into a general war, and do not assume an expansionist power will stop if left unopposed.
Perversely, neither of those lessons apply today to Russia. When the Soviet Union collapsed, Russia shrank and NATO - a military organisation - expanded to its borders. Ergo, the EU/NATO is the expansionist power, not Russia. In reality, Russia lost its empire even as the EU became an Empire, allied with militarist, expansionist NATO.
Europe is not sleepwalking into a war with Russia, it is charging into it with blazing eyes stretched wide open. The sheer insanity of this is incomprehensible - unless one believes the EU wants war purely in order to halt the "far-right" from coming to power in Germany and France, which would mean an end to the tyranny of the Von Der Leyen Imperialist Commission.
Imagine the wicked, murderous, anti-democratic implications of that. A war which will kill millions of Europeans is deliberately engineered by the EU and NATO in order to thwart the democratic process.....
Insane as this sounds, it DOES appear to be their monstrously evil ambition, and our unfortunate reality.

The surprisingly controversial benefits of moderate drinking , by @cjsnowdon snowdon.substack.com/p/the-s…
Just a reminder that lots of liberals don’t really believe in democracy, either, they just do this silly thing where they put all the times that democracy does something they don’t like into a separate bucket called, “populism,” so that they can ignore the will of the people without feeling self-conscious about it

New York City started a club in 1957 for men who did not want to have a heart attack, and nine years later the club had buried more of them than the people who never joined.
It was called the Anti-Coronary Club, which is a name written by someone who had never once been wrong in his life. Norman Jolliffe ran the Nutrition Bureau at the city health department, and he recruited 1,091 businessmen aged forty to fifty-nine, the exact demographic dropping dead on commuter platforms.
They were put on what he named the prudent diet. Corn oil and margarine instead of butter. Cold cereal instead of eggs. Chicken and fish whenever you like, red meat rationed to four meals a week. An ounce of polyunsaturated vegetable oil a day, prescribed, taken like medicine, because that is what everyone believed it was.
There was a comparison group. Men the same age who ate eggs for breakfast and meat three times a day and had not joined anything. They were the doomed ones. That was the whole point of having them.
The club met. The club had a newsletter. The New York Times ran the good news in May 1962 and again in 1964, and by early 1966 Christakis was asking Washington for a national campaign and food labelling, because the results were in and they were marvellous.
The cholesterol had come down. Weight down. Blood pressure down. A third of the heart disease of the men eating steak. Every single number the theory cared about moved in the direction the theory wanted, which is the part nobody disputes to this day.
Jolliffe did not see it. He died in 1961, an overweight diabetic, having eaten his own diet.
Then, nine months after the triumphant paper, the same investigators published a second one.
Twenty-six members of the Anti-Coronary Club had died.
Six of the men who never joined had died.
Eight of the club were dead of heart disease.
Of the men eating eggs and meat three times a day, none.
The paper reported the improvements in cholesterol, weight and blood pressure, noted the reduction in new coronary disease, and then simply stopped discussing the deaths.
Nobody called it off. The prudent diet went into the guidelines, into the schools, into the hospitals, into your mother's shopping trolley, and it is still on the shelf in a tub with a heart on the lid.
Everything since has been the same club with a bigger membership. The number on the blood test comes down, the app goes green, the spread with plant sterols in it is doing its work, and the question of whether the men holding those numbers actually live longer keeps being answered on a piece of paper nobody reads out loud.
They ran the experiment. It came back. They kept the diet and buried the paper with the members.

1% of the population is responsible for essentially all of the violent crime
In the centuries leading up to Europe's heyday, it hanged 1% of each generation
Practically every crime beyond the most petty minor offenses were capital crimes, and that was rigorously enforced. Horse thieves, robbers, murderers, and the like faced not "probation" given to them by a pro-crime judge, but the gallows and gibbet. And they faced it for centuries, from roughly the High Middle Ages to the Georgian period (the Victorians were soft on crime compared to their ancestors)
Resultantly, serious crime mostly faded away. There are always pickpockets and serial killers, to some extent at least, but things like armed robbery can be mostly solved with consistent enough application of the gallows, as it plucks the crime genes out of the population
Because it was freed from the burden of rampant crime, Western civilization could focus on doing great and noble things instead of endlessly subsidizing a criminal underclass
We, on the other hand, have devoted every resource imaginable to subsidizing that criminal underclass that commits all the crime

Harsh truths are @Devon_Eriksen_ ‘s specialty.
It's useless to warn people about something if no one can have a conversation about why it's happening and what must be done to stop it.
And that conversation is something that the tech elite are totally unprepared to have, because the solution will hit them directly in the pocketbook.
I can tell you how to fix the fertility crisis in three words.
But I can't actually fix the fertility crisis with those words, because y'all are not ready to do what's necessary. You think you are, but you're not. And you'll understand why I say you're not when I tell you the three words:
Stop. Hiring. Women.
Now do you get it?
A moment ago, you thought you were willing to do anything to fix this existential threat to every part of the world that matters.
Now, you want to ask me if there isn't, possibly, some gentler way that doesn't involve any nasty shocks to our nice, peaceful, tolerant, inclusive liberal way of life.
Or you're just calling me a big meanie.
Doesn't matter. When you argue with the point I am making here, you are arguing with Mother Nature, and I promise that Mother Nature cannot hear you, and she does not care.
Women already have a job, a job they evolved for. A job that is so demanding that they have to 100% specialized for it.
Women's job is making humans.
And there's only 15 years between the age when it's a felony to make a human with them, and the age when the stuff they need to make humans starts to not work so well.
If they are filling the role of men during that time period, they cannot do their own full-time, maximum effort job, and you get no new humans.
This is precisely why Mother Nature designed women to only mate with men who are wealthier and more powerful than they are. Because a woman, who is working full time at making humans, needs to be supported.
A baby human is an investment in the future. You can't make investments in the future without someone else supporting you in the present.
If men cannot do this, women won't have babies with those men.
This is why every single high-tech civilization has the fertility crisis.
Because every time a civilization gets high-tech, the elites, who buy labor, have a bright idea. Let's start educating the women, they say. That way, we can hire them and double the supply of labor. Which is totally good for society, and the fact that we, personally, will benefit most from this is a total coincidence, and not in any way the whole reason that Wall Street loves feminism.
Everyone knows that there's a near-perfect correlation between female education and the fertility crisis.
But very few people have truly understood why. It's not the education. It's what the women are being educated for.
If you just wanted to teach them matters animal, vegetable, and mineral, along with many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse, there would be no problem at all.
But women are not being educated so they can be interesting conversationalists, or well-rounded human beings. They are being educated so they can sit in a cubicle eight hours a day between the ages of 20 and 35, and answer emails or design marketing campaigns.
That leaves them neither the time nor the resources nor the inclination to make humans, because men aren't any more powerful than they are. Which gives them the ick.
And, of course, they're miserable, because they are genetically programmed to be happy when they do their real job, which is making and refining little humans. Not emails or spreadsheets or marketing campaigns.
But no one is ready for this conversation, because it would involve admitting that every change in Western values after WW2 was a huge mistake.
@elonmusk isn't going to stop hiring women. Hell, it's not even legal to stop hiring women. You can get sued into oblivion for that.
But woman can't make little humans unless the other responsibilities of life are somebody else's problem.
And she doesn't want to make little humans with any man who cannot shield her from all those extra duties.
The bar for being able to do that used to be "reasonably successful tradesman". Now it's actual serious wealth.
We can't IVF our way out of this problem. And we can't just sit around posting "have more babies" on twitter. We have to address the real obstacles that prevent women from having kids.
And the biggest of those is that we have, in effect, demanded that they share every single adult male responsibility from career-building to voting to military service.
All of these responsibilities and burdens were sold to women as opportunities. But nothing is an opportunity if you can't opt out. Just try being 18 years old and finding a man who will 100 percent support and take care of you while you bear his children and do a little light housework.
It's possible, but you had better be exceptionally beautiful, with a sunny personality to match, and social access to the right set of men.
Because the average man can't offer you that deal anymore.
Not won't. Can't.
And there aren't enough rich men to go around.
I know the world of modern fantasy and sci fi is generally considered a woke DEI-infested wasteland. But I’ve found some great stuff written quite recently. At the moment I’m re-reading the Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series.
