🚨 Our analysis of the 2026–27 WSL opening round attendance is out. Despite the WSL expanding from 12 to 14 clubs, this season’s total remains below 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26. Compared with last season, the total fell by 32.4% and the average by 42.1%. The average is the second-lowest of the five seasons studied, above only 2022–23. The median delivers an even clearer finding. At 2,686, it is the lowest in the five-season comparison and 31.2% below last season’s 3,904. The WSL has grown wider—but its typical opening-round crowd has become smaller. Full analysis: newsletter.wslanalytics.com/… #BarclaysWSL #WSL #WomensFootball

City's 4–2 win over Arsenal last weekend was a classic example of how to be ruthless in front of goal. Arsenal won the xG battle (1.61–1.01), created more chances (11–9), had more shots (16–9), and had more shots on target (9–5). ▫️ Yet City won 4–2. City outperformed their xG by 2.99 goals, the largest single-match overperformance recorded by any WSL team this season. Even though Arsenal won the xG and chance-creation battle, those overall numbers did not tell the full story. Lisa Baum’s goal accounted for 0.92 of Arsenal’s 1.61 xG. From open play, City led 0.92–0.56 and created three big chances to Arsenal’s one—all three coming after half-time. The goalkeeping numbers didn’t help Arsenal either. Ayaka Yamashita made seven saves and prevented 0.68 goals for City. At the other end, Anneke Borbe made one save and conceded four goals from 2.09 xG on target, leaving her with a goals-prevented figure of −1.91. City significantly outperformed their total xG, but this was not simply a case of four unlikely finishes. They carried the greater threat whenever opportunities presented themselves and won the goalkeeping battle decisively. #BarclaysWSL #MCWFC #ArsenalWomen #WomensFootball

For the second matchweek in a row, Signe Gaupset is the WSL’s chance-creation leader. She created eight chances against Aston Villa—the most by any player in Matchweek 4 and three more than anyone else. She did not get the goal or assist to complete the performance, but her creative influence was unmistakable. Seven last week. Eight this week. Another dominant performance from Tottenham yesterday. They beat Aston Villa 4–0 and, in doing so, produced 35 shots, 4.53 xG and 73 touches in the opposition box. Just four matches into the season, Spurs have already recorded: ▫️ 15 goals — 43% of last season’s total ▫️ 107 shots — 37% of last season’s total ▫️ 11.73 xG — 37% of last season’s total ▫️ 208 opposition-box touches — 41% of last season’s total Their last two matches alone: 11 goals, 77 shots, 9.22 xG and 155 opposition-box touches. The significance of last week’s 7–0 win over Crystal Palace was tempered by the early red card. But another overwhelming attacking performance against Aston Villa suggests this could be becoming the norm for Spurs. Four matches is still a small sample, but Tottenham’s attacking transformation is becoming difficult to ignore. #COYS #BarclaysWSL #WomensFootball #SpursWomen
